Beating Kanto: A Full Pokemon Leaf Green Walkthrough From Pallet to the Elite Four
Returning to the Kanto region in Pokemon Leaf Green offers a refined experience of the classic journey. This walkthrough covers the most efficient route to becoming the Pokemon League Champion, detailing essential items, gym strategies, and critical story beats for trainers navigating this GBA masterpiece.
The Journey Begins: Pallet Town and the First Choice
Your adventure starts in Pallet Town. After attempting to leave through the northern grass, Professor Oak intervenes, leading you to his lab. The most critical decision occurs here: choosing your starter.
- Bulbasaur (Grass/Poison): Generally considered the "Easy Mode" for the early game. Its type advantage dominates the first two gyms (Rock and Water).
- Squirtle (Water): The balanced choice. It excels against the first gym and remains a sturdy physical/special attacker throughout the game.
- Charmander (Fire): The "Hard Mode" starter. Fire types are rare early on, but it struggles significantly against the first two gym leaders.
After selecting your partner and winning (or losing) the first rival battle, head North to Viridian City. Visit the Poke Mart to receive Oak’s Parcel, return it to the Professor in Pallet Town, and you will receive the Pokedex and five Poke Balls. This officially begins your quest.
Navigating the Viridian Forest and Pewter City
Before heading to Pewter City, explore Route 22 to the west of Viridian City for an optional rival battle. In the Viridian Forest, focus on catching a Pikachu (rare) or a Caterpie. Evolution is fast for Bug-types; a Butterfree with Confusion is surprisingly effective against the forest's residents.
Gym #1: Brock (Pewter City)
Brock specializes in Rock-types.
- Team: Geodude (Lv. 12), Onix (Lv. 14).
- Strategy: If you chose Bulbasaur or Squirtle, use Vine Whip or Bubble for a quick victory. If you chose Charmander, catch a Mankey on Route 22 and train it until it learns Low Kick, which deals massive damage to Brock's heavy rocks.
After the battle, Oak’s aide will give you the Running Shoes. Hold the B button to move significantly faster across the map.
Mt. Moon and the Cerulean Challenge
Route 3 leads to Mt. Moon. This cave is the first major dungeon. Ensure you have Repels and Escape Ropes.
- The Fossil Choice: At the end of the cave, you must choose between the Helix Fossil (Omanyte) and the Dome Fossil (Kabuto). These can be revived much later at Cinnabar Island.
- Hidden Items: Search the craters in the cave for Moon Stones, which are necessary for evolving Nidorino/Nidorina or Clefairy early.
In Cerulean City, you will encounter your rival again near the Nugget Bridge. Defeat the five trainers on the bridge to earn a Gold Nugget. Head East to Route 25 to find Bill’s cottage; helping him rewards you with the S.S. Ticket, which is mandatory for the plot.
Gym #2: Misty (Cerulean City)
Misty uses Water-types.
- Team: Staryu (Lv. 18), Starmie (Lv. 21).
- Strategy: Starmie is fast and hits hard with Swift and Water Pulse. A Grass-type (Ivysaur or Weepinbell) or an Electric-type (Pikachu or Jolteon) is essential here. Be wary of Starmie’s Recover move.
The S.S. Anne and the Vermilion Lightning
From Cerulean, head South through the Underground Path to reach Vermilion City.
- The Fan Club: Speak to the Chairman to get a Bike Voucher.
- S.S. Anne: Board the ship to find HM01 (Cut). You must battle your rival on the second floor before reaching the Captain’s quarters.
- Diglett’s Cave: Before the gym, catch a Dugtrio or a high-level Diglett here. Their Ground-typing makes the upcoming battle trivial.
Gym #3: Lt. Surge (Vermilion City)
Lt. Surge uses Electric-types.
- Team: Voltorb (Lv. 21), Pikachu (Lv. 18), Raichu (Lv. 24).
- Strategy: The gym puzzle involves searching trash cans for two consecutive switches. In battle, Ground-types are immune to Electric attacks. Use Dig or Magnitude to end the fight quickly.
Rock Tunnel to Celadon City: The Mid-Game Expansion
After obtaining the Boulder, Cascade, and Thunder badges, use Cut to access Route 9. Navigate through the Rock Tunnel (HM05 Flash is recommended but not mandatory if you know the layout). You will emerge near Lavender Town.
In Lavender Town, the Pokemon Tower is currently blocked by a ghost. Head West to Celadon City, the largest hub in Kanto.
Key Activities in Celadon:
- The Game Corner: Hidden under a poster in the casino is the Team Rocket Hideout. Clearing this grants you the Silph Scope, allowing you to identify the ghost in Lavender Town.
- The Department Store: Buy Great Balls, TMs, and evolutionary stones.
- The Mansion: Enter through the back to find an Eevee at level 25.
Gym #4: Erika (Celadon City)
Erika uses Grass-types.
- Team: Victreebel (Lv. 29), Tangela (Lv. 24), Vileplume (Lv. 29).
- Strategy: Fire, Flying, and Ice moves are highly effective. Charizard, Pidgeot, or even a Flareon will make this battle straightforward. Watch out for status effects like Sleep Powder.
Clearing the Ghost Tower and Silph Co.
Return to Lavender Town with the Silph Scope. Climb the Pokemon Tower, defeat the spirit of Marowak, and rescue Mr. Fuji to receive the Poke Flute. This item allows you to wake up Snorlax, which are blocking routes 12 and 16.
Next, head to Saffron City. Team Rocket has occupied Silph Co. This 11-story building is a maze of warp tiles.
- Goal: Find the Card Key on the 5th floor. Then, navigate to the 11th floor to defeat Giovanni and the Rival.
- Reward: The President will give you the Master Ball. Use it sparingly, ideally for the legendary roaming beasts or Mewtwo.
Gym #5: Sabrina (Saffron City)
Sabrina specializes in Psychic-types.
- Team: Kadabra (Lv. 38), Mr. Mime (Lv. 37), Venomoth (Lv. 38), Alakazam (Lv. 43).
- Strategy: Psychic-types have low physical defense in this generation. Use strong physical attackers like Snorlax (Body Slam) or a fast Ghost-type like Gengar (Shadow Ball, though it is physical in this game). Dark-type moves (if available via TM) are also effective.
The Journey to Fuchsia and the Safari Zone
You can reach Fuchsia City via Silence Bridge or Cycling Road. The latter is faster.
- Safari Zone: You must find the Secret House to get HM03 (Surf) and the Gold Teeth (to trade for HM04 Strength in the warden’s house). This area is also home to rare Pokemon like Chansey and Scyther/Pinsir.
Gym #6: Koga (Fuchsia City)
Koga uses Poison-types (and some Bug-types).
- Team: Koffing (Lv. 37), Muk (Lv. 39), Koffing (Lv. 37), Weezing (Lv. 43).
- Strategy: Ground and Psychic moves are king here. If you have an Alakazam or a Dugtrio, this gym is quite manageable. Beware of the invisible walls and Koga's tendency to use Evasion-boosting moves.
Cinnabar Island: The Riddle and the Fire
Surf south from Pallet Town or Fuchsia City to reach Cinnabar Island. The gym is locked. You must enter the burnt-out Pokemon Mansion to find the Secret Key.
Gym #7: Blaine (Cinnabar Island)
Blaine uses Fire-types.
- Team: Growlithe (Lv. 42), Ponyta (Lv. 40), Rapidash (Lv. 42), Arcanine (Lv. 47).
- Strategy: You can bypass trainer battles by answering trivia questions on the machines. In the fight, Water, Ground, and Rock moves are essential. Blastoise or Vaporeon can sweep this team easily.
The Final Badge: Return to Viridian
With seven badges, the Viridian Gym finally opens. The leader is revealed to be Giovanni.
Gym #8: Giovanni (Viridian City)
Giovanni uses Ground-types.
- Team: Rhyhorn (Lv. 45), Dugtrio (Lv. 42), Nidoqueen (Lv. 44), Nidoking (Lv. 45), Rhydon (Lv. 50).
- Strategy: Despite the high levels, his team has massive weaknesses to Water and Grass. A single high-level Water-type with Surf can often defeat his entire roster.
The Road to the Elite Four: Victory Road
Head West from Viridian City to the Indigo Plateau. You will pass through eight checkpoints checking for your badges. Victory Road requires HM04 Strength to move boulders onto switches. Train your team to at least level 55 here.
The Final Gauntlet: The Elite Four
Stock up on Full Restores and Revives. Once you enter, you cannot leave until you win or black out.
1. Lorelei (Ice/Water)
- Weakness: Electric for her Water-types, Fighting or Fire for her Ice-types (like Jynx). Lapras is her tank; use high-damage physical moves.
2. Bruno (Fighting/Rock)
- Weakness: Psychic and Flying moves destroy his Fighting-types. Use Water or Grass for his two Onix.
3. Agatha (Ghost/Poison)
- Weakness: Psychic and Ground. Since most of her team is part Poison-type, a strong Alakazam or Kadabra can often one-shot her entire team. Avoid using Normal or Fighting moves.
4. Lance (Dragon)
- Weakness: Ice moves (Ice Beam/Blizzard) are devastating against his Dragonairs and Dragonite. Electric moves are best for Gyarados and Aerodactyl.
The Champion Battle
Your rival has a diverse team. The composition depends on his starter, but generally includes Pidgeot, Alakazam, and Rhydon.
- Strategy: Switch your Pokemon to maintain type advantage. Do not let his Alakazam set up. Use your highest-damage moves and don't hesitate to use items.
Post-Game: The Sevii Islands and Beyond
After becoming the Champion and having 60+ Pokemon in your Pokedex, talk to Professor Oak. He will give you the National Pokedex. This unlocks the remaining Sevii Islands (4-7), where you can find Johto-region Pokemon and uncover the secrets of the Ruby and Sapphire gems to enable trading with other GBA titles.
You can also return to Cerulean Cave to face Mewtwo, the strongest Pokemon in the game. Ensure you have a high-level team and plenty of Ultra Balls (or your Master Ball) before entering.
Essential Tips for Success
- The VS Seeker: Obtained from the woman in the Vermilion City Pokemon Center. It allows you to rebattle trainers on routes, making grinding for levels and money much easier.
- TM Conservation: Some TMs like Earthquake or Psychic are found only once. Choose which Pokemon learns them carefully.
- Held Items: Don't forget to use items like the Quick Claw or Mystic Water to give your team a slight edge in tough battles.
By following this progression, you will navigate the Kanto region with efficiency, ensuring your team is always prepared for the next challenge in Pokemon Leaf Green.
