FF4 Walkthrough Pixel Remaster: Complete Guide to All Secrets and Bosses
Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster reintroduces the legendary tale of Cecil Harvey with updated visuals and quality-of-life features. This walkthrough covers the most efficient path through the game while ensuring no treasure chests, hidden items, or bestiary entries are missed. Since certain locations become inaccessible as the story progresses, following a structured path is essential for completionists aiming for the 100% achievement.
Essential System Settings and Boost Features
Before heading out of Castle Baron, adjust the configuration for a smoother experience. Set the default movement to 'Run' to speed up exploration. The Pixel Remaster version includes a 'Boost' feature in the menu, allowing you to increase EXP and Gil gain up to 4x. For a balanced experience, 1x or 2x is sufficient, but 4x is invaluable for late-game grinding.
Turn on 'Battle Mode: Wait' in the settings. This pauses the Action Time Battle (ATB) gauge while you navigate menus, which is critical for complex boss fights. Additionally, the 'Auto-Battle' feature remembers your last action and speeds up combat, making routine encounters much faster.
Act 1: The Dark Knight’s Redemption
Castle Baron and the Mist Cave
The journey begins in Castle Baron. After the opening cutscenes, collect the hidden items in the storage area on the east side of the castle (480 Gil, Ether, and Tent). Visit the northwest tower to rest. Once Kain joins, travel northwest to the Mist Cave.
Mist Dragon Boss Strategy: When the dragon turns into mist, stop all attacks. Attacking during the mist phase triggers a 'Cold Mist' counter-attack that can devastate your low-level party. Simply use the 'Defend' command or heal until the dragon reforms. Cecil should attack normally, and Kain should use 'Jump' only when the dragon is in its physical form.
The Oasis of Kaipo and the Underground Waterway
After the events in Mist, Cecil is left alone with Rydia. Head northeast to the desert town of Kaipo. After a forced battle with Baron soldiers, search the house in the northeast for Rosa. To save her, you need a Sand Ruby.
Head north to the Underground Waterway. This is where you meet Tellah. The waterway is a multi-level dungeon; ensure you check every corner for chests to stay on track for the treasure achievement.
Octomammoth Boss Strategy: Octomammoth is weak to Lightning and Darkness. Use Rydia’s 'Thunder' and Tellah’s 'Thunder' or 'Lightning'. As the boss loses tentacles, its speed decreases. Focus on high-damage magic to end the fight quickly.
Damcyan and the Antlion’s Den
After witnessing the bombing of Damcyan, Edward joins the party. Use the hovercraft to cross the shoals to the Antlion’s Den to the south.
Antlion Boss Strategy: Antlion counters all physical attacks with 'Counter Horn'. To avoid damage, have Rydia cast 'Chocobo' or 'Blizzard' while Edward uses 'Hide' or heals. Cecil should only attack when the boss's eyes turn white, though relying on magic is safer.
Act 2: The Trial of Mt. Ordeals
Mount Hobs and Fabul
With the Sand Ruby in hand, return to Kaipo to cure Rosa, then head to Mt. Hobs. You will encounter Yang here. This mountain features the 'Mom Bomb' boss.
Mom Bomb Boss Strategy: The boss has two phases. In phase one, attack normally. In phase two, it grows larger and eventually explodes. Ensure your party’s HP is near maximum before the explosion. After it splits into smaller bombs, use Yang’s 'Kick' and Rydia’s 'Summon' to clear them simultaneously.
Following the battle, proceed to Fabul Castle. Prepare for a series of gauntlet battles. You will eventually face Kain in a scripted loss—do not waste items here.
Mysidia and the Transformation
After the shipwreck, Cecil arrives in Mysidia. To progress, he must climb Mt. Ordeals to the east to cast aside his dark blade. You will be joined by the twins, Palom and Porom. Their 'Twincast' ability is incredibly potent for clearing mobs.
Scarmiglione Boss Strategy: The first Fiend of Elements is fought twice. In the first phase, use 'Fira' or 'Fire' to clear the undead minions. In the second phase (on the bridge), Scarmiglione attacks from behind, flipping your rows. Use the 'Row' command immediately. He is undead, so 'Cura' and 'Fire' spells deal massive damage.
The Dark Knight Trial: At the summit, Cecil faces himself. The key to this fight is non-resistance. Do not attack. Simply use the 'Defend' or 'Heal' command. After several turns, the battle ends, and Cecil becomes a Paladin, resetting his level to 1 but vastly increasing his potential.
Act 3: Infiltrating Baron and the Tower of Zot
Returning to Baron
With Cecil’s new powers, return to Mysidia and use the Devil’s Road to reach Baron. Go to the Inn to find Yang, who is brainwashed. Defeat his guards to bring him back to the party. Use the Baron Key to enter the Old Waterway under the castle.
Baigan and Cagnazzo: Inside the castle, you face Baigan. Focus on the body; if you kill the arms first, they regenerate. Next is Cagnazzo, the Fiend of Water. When he gathers water around his feet, immediately hit him with a Lightning spell to break the wave, or he will cast 'Tsunami'.
The Tower of Zot (MISSABLE ALERT)
The Tower of Zot is the first of three temporary dungeons. Once you defeat the boss here, you can never return. Ensure you have collected every treasure chest and encountered every enemy for the bestiary before facing Barbariccia.
Magus Sisters Strategy: Focus on the middle sister (Sandy) first, as she reflects spells. Alternatively, kill the tall one (Mindy) to stop their 'Delta Attack' combo.
Barbariccia Strategy: When she spins into a tornado, she becomes nearly immune to physical attacks and magic. Use Kain’s 'Jump' to break her out of the tornado form. This is the only way to make her vulnerable again.
Act 4: The Underworld and the Tower of Babil
The Dwarven Castle and Golbez
Travel to Agart and drop the Magma Stone into the well to open the path to the Underworld. Head straight for the Dwarf Castle. Inside the Crystal Room, you face the Calcobrena dolls, followed by Golbez.
Golbez Boss Strategy: This is a scripted fight where Rydia returns to save the day. Once Rydia joins, have her summon 'Mist Dragon' or 'Titan'. Cecil should focus on healing and attacking. Golbez shifts his elemental weaknesses, so use 'Libra' if you are unsure which spell to use.
The Tower of Babil (MISSABLE ALERT)
The Tower of Babil is split into two parts. The first visit (from the Underworld side) and the second visit (from the Overworld side) contain different enemies and treasures. Both sections are missable.
Dr. Lugae Boss Strategy: In his second form, Lugae uses 'Reversal Gas', which swaps the effects of healing and damage. When the gas is active, use 'Potions' or 'Cura' on the boss to deal damage, and use attack commands on your own party to heal. Watch the status icons closely.
Act 5: The Sealed Cave and The Moon
The Sealed Cave
To enter the Sealed Cave, you need the Luca Necklace. This dungeon is famous for its 'Trap Doors'. Each door is a mini-boss that can summon a 'Chimera' or 'Mantis'. To prevent the summon, kill the door quickly using high-level magic or physical bursts.
Demon Wall Boss Strategy: The wall slowly moves toward the party. If it reaches you, it uses 'Crush' for instant death. Use 'Haste' on your physical attackers (Cecil, Kain, Edge) and have Rydia summon 'Leviathan' or 'Bahamut' if you have them. Do not use slow-casting spells.
The Lunar Subterrane: The Final Descent
After obtaining the Lunar Whale, fly to the Moon. The final dungeon, the Lunar Subterrane, contains the game's best equipment but also the most dangerous enemies. This is where you find the 'Pink Puff' enemies (in a specific room on B5) that drop the rare Pink Tail.
White Dragon, Dark Bahamut, and Plague Horror: These are optional bosses guarding the ultimate weapons (Muramasa, Crystal Mail, etc.).
- Plague Horror: Casts 'Doom' on the party. You must kill it before the 10-second timer hits zero.
- Lunasaur: Guards the Ribbon. Use 'Wall' or 'Reflect' to bounce their Bio spells back at them.
Completionist Checklist: Don't Miss These
To achieve 100% completion in the Pixel Remaster, pay close attention to these three areas that become inaccessible:
- Tower of Zot: Total of 2 bestiary entries and several chests. Once Barbariccia is defeated, it's gone.
- Tower of Babil: This is the most common place to miss items. The enemies change after the encounter with Lugae, and the entire tower becomes locked after the Giant of Babil sequence starts.
- Giant of Babil: Once you enter the Giant, you cannot leave until the boss is defeated. Ensure you collect all chests and Bestiary entries #159 through #164 here.
The Pink Tail Grind
In the Pixel Remaster, the easiest way to get the Pink Tail is to use 'Sirens' (purchasable in the late game at the Hummingway Abode on the Moon). Go to the small room on the 5th basement level (B5) of the Lunar Subterrane. Use a Siren to force an encounter with five Pink Puffs. With the Boost feature set to 4x Gil, you can easily afford hundreds of Sirens. The drop rate is low, but the 'Auto-Battle' feature makes the grind significantly more bearable.
Excalibur Sidequest
After obtaining the Adamantite from the Tail Collector (by trading a Pink Tail for Adamant Armor, or more simply, trading the Rat Tail found in the Land of Summons), take the Adamantite to the smithy Kokkol in the Underworld. He will upgrade Cecil’s 'Excalibur', which is one of the strongest holy-elemental weapons in the game.
Final Boss Strategy: Zeromus
Before the final battle, ensure Cecil is equipped with the Crystal gear, Kain with the Holy Lance, and Rosa with the Artemis Bow.
Phase 1: Cecil must use the 'Crystal' item from his inventory to reveal Zeromus's true form.
Phase 2: Zeromus uses 'Big Bang', a devastating AoE attack that deals massive damage and inflicts a damage-over-time effect.
- Rosa: Constant 'Curaja' every turn. Do not stop to cast buffs like Shell or Protect unless Zeromus is in a lull.
- Rydia: Use 'Bahamut' or 'Meteor'. If her HP is too low, keep her on item duty.
- Edge: Throw 'Fuma Shurikens'. They deal the highest consistent damage.
- Cecil & Kain: Attack and Jump respectively. Kain's 'Jump' can help him avoid a 'Big Bang' if timed correctly.
By managing your healing cycles and ensuring Rosa has enough MP (use Elixirs if necessary), Zeromus will eventually fall, concluding the epic tale of the Red Wings.
