Ff6 Pixel Remaster Walkthrough: The Path to 100% Completion
Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster represents the definitive way to experience one of the greatest RPGs of all time. This version introduces quality-of-life improvements such as an updated UI, auto-battle, and a mini-map that tracks treasure chest progress. To achieve a 100% completion run, attention must be paid to the 214 required treasure chests, 50 hidden items, and the 346 bestiary entries, many of which are highly missable.
core mechanics and missable content
Before diving into the narrative, understanding the specific mechanics of the Pixel Remaster is vital. Pressing the map button allows for a quick check of treasure progress in any area. The Bestiary is accessed via the main menu's extras section.
Several achievements are easily missed:
- Legendary Treasure Hunter: 100% of chests (217 total, but 214 for the stat).
- Item Detector: All 50 hidden items.
- Field Research: 100% Bestiary entries. Some monsters only appear during specific story beats (like the Imperial camp or the Escape from Vector).
- Master Blue Mage: Strago must learn 20 Lores.
A key strategy for veteran players is leaving certain chests closed during the World of Balance (Act I). These chests often contain basic items like Potions or Phoenix Downs early on, but transform into high-tier equipment like Ribbon or Guard Bracelet in the World of Ruin (Act II).
act i: the world of balance
the narshe beginning
The journey starts in Narshe with a mysterious woman (Terra), Biggs, and Wedge.
Bestiary Alert: Ensure encounters with Guard (001), Silver Lobo (002), and Megalo Doth (003) are registered before the mines.
Boss: Ymir (ID 263/264)
- Strategy: Attack only the head. If the head retreats into the shell, stop all attacks. Attacking the shell triggers a Megavolt counterattack that can wipe the party.
After the event at the frozen Esper, Terra is rescued by Arvis. Check the clock in his house for an Elixir {Hidden Item #1}. During the Narshe Mines escape, Locke and several Moogle teams protect Terra. To maximize rewards, defeat the Guard Leader (ID 265). Stealing from him yields a Mythril Knife.
figaro castle and south figaro
At Figaro Castle, speak with King Edgar. A notable tip: if Edgar is the party leader when shopping, prices are discounted by 50%. Pick up the Auto Crossbow and Noiseblaster Tools immediately.
In the desert outside, encounter Sand Ray (009) and Alacran (010). Proceed to South Figaro. In this town, hidden items are abundant. Search the barrels and crates for a Potion, Antidote, and Eyedrops. In the basement of the rich man's house, search the cider barrels for more loot.
mt. kolts and returner hideout
Climbing Mt. Kolts leads to the first encounter with Sabin.
Boss: Vargas
- Strategy: Use regular attacks until Sabin joins. When prompted, use Sabin’s Blitz command. The input for 'Raging Fist' is Left, Right, Left. In the Pixel Remaster, Blitz inputs are simplified and can be selected from a menu or performed with directional keys.
At the Returner Hideout, a choice presented by Banon affects your reward. Refusing to help three times yields a Genji Glove, while accepting immediately gives a Gauntlet. The Genji Glove is generally considered superior for late-game dual-wielding builds.
the three scenarios
After the Lethe River sequence (protecting Banon is mandatory), the party splits. All three scenarios must be completed to reunite in Narshe.
scenario 1: terra, edgar, and banon
This is a short, linear path back to Narshe. Use Edgar's Tools to clear mobs and Banon's 'Pray' command to keep health high without consuming MP.
scenario 2: locke’s infiltration
Locke must navigate South Figaro by stealing clothes from Merchants and Soldiers.
- Secret: In the basement where Celes is held, there is a hidden path behind the bottom-right cell leading to a Ribbon chest. This is one of the most important accessories in the game.
scenario 3: sabin’s odyssey
This is the longest scenario. Sabin meets Cyan and Gau.
- Imperial Camp: This area is missable. Ensure you fight every enemy type here. Defeating Telstar (ID 033) is a common challenge; use Cyan’s Bushido and Sabin’s Blitz.
- Phantom Forest: At the end, you board the Phantom Train. You can use a Phoenix Down on the Phantom Train (Boss) for an instant kill.
- The Veldt: Here, Gau can learn enemy 'Rages'. It is recommended to stay here for a while to learn the Stray Cat Rage (Catscratch), which provides massive physical damage.
the journey to the magitek research facility
After the Battle of Narshe (a strategy sequence similar to the beginning), the party travels to Zozo to find Terra.
Zozo Clock Puzzle: Set the clock to 6:10:50 to obtain Edgar’s Chainsaw, one of the strongest Tools in the game.
the opera house
Celes must perform the opera. The player must select the correct lyrics:
- "O my beloved..."
- "I am the darkness..."
- "Must I forgo..."
Then, follow the character's movements on stage. Failure results in a game over. Afterward, a timed sequence on the rafters leads to a battle with Ultros.
vector and the magitek factory
This is a critical area for the Bestiary. Once the factory is cleared, you cannot return.
- Enemy Warning: Fight Onion Knight (058) and Proto Armor (060).
- Boss: Ifrit & Shiva: Focus on one at a time. Using Ice magic on Ifrit and Fire on Shiva is effective.
- Boss: Number 024: He changes his elemental weakness frequently. Use Libra or non-elemental attacks.
- The Escape: The minecart sequence features Mag Roaders. There are two color variants; ensure both are fought for Bestiary completion.
the floating continent: the point of no return
Before heading to the Floating Continent, ensure you have collected all chests in the World of Balance.
Crucial Missable: Shadow On the Floating Continent, after defeating AtmaWeapon (Ultima Weapon), the party must flee. At the final exit point, do NOT jump to the airship. Choose the option "Wait for Shadow." Stand at the edge and wait until the timer reaches roughly 0:05. Shadow will appear, and you will escape together. If you do not wait, Shadow is permanently dead for the rest of the game.
act ii: the world of ruin
The world has ended, and Celes awakens on a solitary island. After the sequence with Cid (feeding him fast fish saves him, slow fish kills him—this is purely cosmetic/story-related and doesn't affect 100% completion), Celes sets out to find her friends.
reassembling the party
The game becomes non-linear here, but a specific order is recommended for ease of play:
- Albrook and Tzen: Rescue the child in the burning house in Tzen to get Sabin.
- Mobliz: Visit twice to recruit Terra after fighting Humbaba.
- Nikeah and South Figaro: Follow the thief 'Gerad' to find Edgar in the Ancient Castle/Figaro basement.
- Kohlingen: Find Setzer in the pub. This unlocks the Falcon, allowing free travel across the world.
advanced recruitment and side quests
With the Falcon, the world is open.
- Darill’s Tomb: Located on the southern continent. This is where you get the Falcon. Be sure to pick up the Experience Egg behind a hidden wall.
- Maranda: Complete the 'Wounded Soldier' side quest by sending letters from Mobliz. This eventually leads to a battle for the Looming Cloud and high-tier equipment.
- Umaro’s Cave (Narshe): Bring Mog to the caves in Narshe. After fighting Umaro, Mog can convince him to join. Mog himself is found in the Narshe caves; check the spot where the Lone Wolf was standing.
- Gogo’s Lair: Go to Triangle Island (northeast map corner) and let the Zone Eater monster swallow your party. Navigate the dungeon to find Gogo, the mimic.
- Cyan’s Soul: Go to Doma Castle with Cyan in the party and sleep. This triggers a dream dungeon. Complete it to unlock Cyan's strongest Bushido skills.
- The Cultist's Tower: This is a magic-only dungeon. To make it easier, use the Moltov Cocktail or the Phantom Esper for invisibility. At the top, the Magic Master boss casts Ultima upon death. Cast Life 3 (Reraise) on your party before finishing him off.
hunting the eight legendary dragons
To unlock the ultimate Esper, you must defeat the eight dragons scattered across the world:
- Storm Dragon: Mt. Zozo (behind a switch).
- Red Dragon: Phoenix Cave.
- Ice Dragon: Narshe (snowy cliffs).
- Blue Dragon: Ancient Castle (under Figaro Desert).
- Holy Dragon: Cultist’s Tower.
- Gold Dragon: Kefka’s Tower.
- Skull Dragon: Kefka’s Tower.
- Earth Dragon: Opera House (trigger the switch in the control room).
preparing for kefka’s tower
The final dungeon requires three separate parties. It is recommended to balance the teams so each has at least one primary healer and one heavy damage dealer.
Key Equipment for the Finale:
- Offering (Master's Scroll): Found in the Ancient Castle. Allows four attacks per turn.
- Genji Glove: Pairs with the Offering for eight attacks.
- Economizer (Celestriad): Found by defeating Brachiosaur in the Dinosaur Forest (north of the Veldt). Reduces all MP costs to 1.
- Ultima Weapon: Damage scales with the user's HP. Best used by Edgar or Terra.
- Paladin Shield: This is the most tedious item. You must equip the Cursed Shield (found in Narshe) and win 256 battles with it. Once uncursed, it becomes the best shield in the game and teaches the Ultima spell.
the final battle
Kefka’s Tower features several bosses (The Warring Triad) before the final encounter.
Boss: Kefka (God Mode)
- Phase 1-3: Defeat the tiers of the tower. Use multi-target spells like Meteor or Quake (if your party has Earth protection).
- Final Phase: Kefka uses 'Fallen One', dropping the party's HP to 1. Immediately use a Megalixir or Curaga. His 'Havoc Wing' deals massive physical damage, so ensure Golem is summoned or protect is active. With Ultima magic or the Master's Scroll + Genji Glove combo, his 62,000 HP will drop quickly.
completing the bestiary and chests
After the final boss, you can save your 'Clear Data'. This allows you to go back and finish any remaining side quests or Bestiary entries.
Checklist for 100%:
- Did you get the Ragnarok Magicite or Sword? In the Pixel Remaster, it is often better to take the Magicite to learn Ultima, although the Paladin Shield also teaches it.
- Did you find the Hidden Items in the Magitek Factory? These are the most common misses.
- Did you encounter the Intangir? This invisible monster is on a small island in the northeast of the World of Balance. It is difficult but necessary for the Bestiary.
By following this path, every secret in Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster is within reach. The updated graphics and orchestral score make this 100% completion journey a rewarding experience for both new players and returning fans.
