Transitioning into the Blue Gate map in ARC Raiders marks a significant shift in how the game treats player agency. While earlier missions in the Buried City or the surrounding ruins often involve explicit markers and predictable loot paths, the quest titled "A First Foothold" is designed to test environmental literacy. Given by Apollo, this mission requires repairing and stabilizing four distinct pieces of infrastructure scattered across the far reaches of the valley.

There are no persistent UI icons guiding the way to these spots. Success relies on recognizing construction cues like orange cones, scaffolding, and exposed wiring. Understanding the layout of the Blue Gate is essential for survival, as this region introduces higher-tier ARC threats and more complex verticality than the initial tutorial areas. Completing these tasks is the only way to establish a permanent presence for the Raiders in this valley.

The Unique Mechanics of A First Foothold

Unlike extraction-focused quests where dying means losing all progress, A First Foothold uses a persistence system. This is a crucial distinction for players struggling with the increased lethality of the Blue Gate. Each of the four objectives is an independent interaction. Once the interaction prompt finishes and the progress bar fills, that specific sub-task is permanently checked off.

There is no requirement to extract alive for the quest progress to count. This design allows for a "suicide run" strategy. Many experienced players recommend heading into a raid with a free loadout—minimal gear and a standard-issue weapon—specifically to sprint to one or two of these locations. If an ARC patrol or a rival Raider squad intercepts the run after the interaction is complete, the progress remains saved. The objectives can be tackled in any order, and they do not need to be completed in a single raid session.

Stabilizing the Observation Deck Near Ridgeline

The eastern portion of the Blue Gate is dominated by the Ridgeline, a high-altitude area characterized by steep cliffs and long sightlines. The observation deck is located along the very edge of the map's eastern boundary.

Locating the structure requires looking for a metal platform that appears unfinished. Unlike the surrounding ruins, this deck is adorned with bright yellow flags and a cluster of orange construction cones. There is often a truck parked nearby, partially blocking a dirt path. To complete the objective, approach the edge of the platform where the structural beams are exposed. A prompt to "Stabilize Deck" will appear.

From a tactical perspective, Ridgeline is one of the safer zones for this quest. It is far removed from the high-traffic loot zones in the center of the map. However, the open nature of the deck makes players visible from the valleys below. It is advisable to crouch while interacting to minimize the profile against the horizon. Once finished, the high ground offers a good vantage point to plan an exit or scout for the next objective.

Enabling the Comms Terminal Near Olive Grove

Moving to the southern sector of the map brings Raiders to the Olive Grove. This area is lush and frequently visited by players looking for organic resources like olives, lemons, and apricots. Because of this high player density, the comms terminal objective carries a higher risk of PvP encounters.

The terminal itself is situated on a small, elevated metal platform southwest of the main grove area. It is easily identified by its glowing yellow monitor, which stands out against the greenery and the rusted metal of the platform. Interacting with this terminal takes several seconds, leaving the player vulnerable.

Environmental awareness is key here. Before stepping onto the platform, listen for the telltale sounds of Leapers or the heavy mechanical thuds of patrolling ARCs. The proximity to the collapsed highway means that squads often move through this area toward extraction points. If the terminal area seems too active, circling around the southern cliffs and waiting for a quiet window is the most reliable approach.

Nailing Down Roof Plates at Trapper’s Glade

Trapper’s Glade, located on the western edge of the map, is arguably the most dangerous objective in A First Foothold. The dense foliage and uneven terrain provide excellent cover for both ARCs and opportunistic Raiders. Specifically, this area is a frequent patrol route for the Bombardier, a high-threat ARC machine that can end a run in seconds with its area-of-effect explosives.

The objective is a small stone and wood raider structure located almost exactly under the "S" in the word "Trapper's" on the tactical map. Look for a building with red and yellow flags hanging from a makeshift antenna. To reach the roof, find the red crates stacked against the eastern side of the building. These serve as a natural staircase. Once on the roof, locate the loose metal plates near the center.

The interaction here is "Nail Down Roof Plates." Because of the Bombardier's presence, silence is the best tool. Holstering weapons to move faster and avoiding unnecessary combat with smaller ARC units will prevent drawing the attention of the larger machines. If the Bombardier is heard nearby (indicated by a deep, rhythmic mechanical pulsing), it is best to stay hidden inside the structure until it passes before attempting to climb onto the roof.

Rotating Satellite Dishes North of the Data Vault

The final objective takes players to the far northern reaches of the Blue Gate, specifically to a ruined church perched on the hills overlooking the Data Vault. This area is remote, but its proximity to the Data Vault—a high-value loot POI—means that late-game squads are often nearby.

The church is a distinct architectural landmark. It has a tall, skeletal steeple and several satellite dishes mounted to its crumbling roof. Accessing the roof requires some basic parkour. There is scaffolding and a series of stacked boxes on the side of the building that allow for a climb to the upper levels.

On the roof, interact with the main satellite dish to "Rotate Dish." The interaction is quick, but the height makes the player a prime target for snipers positioned on the surrounding ridges. After the animation completes, the church interior can provide temporary cover. There is often a small amount of loot inside the pews, though the primary goal should be a quick descent and relocation away from the Data Vault's noise.

Optimizing the Route for Efficiency

For most players, attempting all four locations in a single 20-minute raid is a recipe for disaster. The objectives form a massive circle around the entire map boundary. A more effective strategy involves splitting the quest into two distinct runs based on spawn locations.

The Northern/Eastern Run: If the spawn point is near the mountain tunnels or the eastern ridges, prioritize the Church and the Ridgeline observation deck. These two are relatively close in terms of travel time along the map's outer edge. This route avoids the chaotic center and the dangerous Trapper’s Glade.

The Southern/Western Run: If spawning near the river or the southern fields, focus on the Olive Grove terminal and the Trapper’s Glade roof. These areas are more densely packed with obstacles and enemies, requiring a slower, more methodical approach.

In both scenarios, the most important tactic is to holster the primary weapon while traveling between points. This increases sprint speed and reduces stamina consumption, which is vital when crossing the vast distances of the Blue Gate. Furthermore, bringing Noisemakers can help distract ARC patrols, allowing for a clean interaction with the quest objects.

Survival Tips for the Blue Gate

The Blue Gate is a step up in difficulty. Beyond the quest objectives, the environmental hazards are more pronounced. The Rocketeer ARCs are a constant threat in open fields, and their long-range tracking missiles can be devastating if caught without cover.

Always move from cover to cover. The temptation to sprint across the open valleys to reach the next quest marker is high, but the verticality of the map means someone is almost always watching from a ridge. Use the "Inspect" feature on the map frequently to ensure no other squads are extracting nearby, as extraction zones often become ambush points for those finishing quests.

If the quest feels overwhelming, consider the "Naked Run." By entering the raid with nothing but a knife and the basic free chest rig, there is zero financial risk. This removes the stress of losing high-tier gear, allowing for more aggressive exploration and faster completion of the interaction prompts.

Rewards and Next Steps

Once all four interactions are confirmed in the quest log, the task is not complete until it is turned in at the Speranza hub. Return to Apollo in the trader's district to collect the rewards.

The rewards for A First Foothold are designed to bolster a Raider's tactical utility:

  • 3x Shrapnel Grenades: Excellent for clearing out groups of smaller ARC units or forcing enemy Raiders out of cover.
  • 3x Snap Blast Grenades: High-speed explosives that detonate on impact, perfect for self-defense against Leapers.
  • 3x Heavy Fuze Grenades: These deal massive damage to armored targets, making them useful for future encounters with the Bombardier.
  • 2x Noisemakers: A specialized tool that detects and distracts enemy movement, which becomes a staple for later, more difficult quests in the Blue Gate.

Completing this mission unlocks the next tier of Apollo's tasks, including "Reduced to Rubble," which dives deeper into the lore of why the infrastructure was abandoned in the first place. More importantly, it provides the player with a thorough understanding of the Blue Gate's layout, a skill that is far more valuable than any piece of loot found in the ruins.
