Finding J'skar in Oblivion: Location, Invisibility, and Quest Tips
The mystery of the missing Khajiit in the Bruma Mages Guild is one of the earliest hurdles many players face in Cyrodiil. If you are navigating the Bruma Recommendation quest, the primary objective is to find J'skar, a Journeyman mage who seems to have vanished into thin air. While the guild head, Jeanne Frasoric, appears genuinely concerned about his disappearance, the truth is far less sinister and involves a fair bit of magical mischief.
Understanding J'skar’s location requires looking past the physical world and into the mechanics of Illusion magic. This Khajiit isn't actually gone; he is simply taking advantage of a high-level Invisibility spell to avoid his superior. Locating him is a multi-step process that varies depending on your preferred playstyle—whether you favor social engineering or brute-force magic.
The Bruma Mages Guild Basement: J'skar’s Primary Location
During the initial stages of the Bruma Recommendation quest, J'skar is physically present within the walls of the Bruma Mages Guild. However, because he is permanently invisible during this phase, he does not appear on your map as a standard NPC, and he won't respond to casual exploration.
He primarily haunts the basement and living quarters of the guild hall. If you descend the stairs into the lower levels where the guild members sleep and study, you are in the right place. Under the effects of his Chameleon-like spell, J'skar spends most of his day wandering aimlessly through these hallways. He is often found in the southwestern room of the basement—the one containing his bed and a writing desk—or paced along the corridors near the southern staircase.
If you have high enough graphics settings or a keen eye, you might notice a faint, shimmering distortion in the air, similar to heat waves on a road. This is J'skar. Attempting to interact with this "blur" will prompt a brief, dismissive comment: "Go away! You'll ruin everything!" To progress the quest, simply bumping into him is not enough; you must force him to reveal himself.
How to Reveal J'skar: The Volanaro Path
The most common way to fix J'skar's location and make him visible is to cooperate with his partner-in-crime, Volanaro. Volanaro is an Altmer mage usually found in the main hall or the basement. He is the mastermind behind the prank on Jeanne Frasoric.
To get Volanaro to help you, you must first raise his disposition. If his favor toward you is below 70, he will likely be tight-lipped about the situation. Using the Persuasion minigame or a Charm spell is essential here. Once he trusts you, he will propose a trade: he will reveal J'skar if you help him play a prank on Jeanne.
This involves stealing Jeanne Frasoric's "Manual of Spellcraft" from her desk in her private upstairs quarters. Volanaro will even provide you with a "Minor Latch Crack" spell if your Security skill is low. After you successfully retrieve the book and hand it over to Volanaro, he will instruct you to meet him in the living quarters at 10 PM.
At exactly 10 PM, Volanaro will cast a Dispel spell on the empty air in the basement, and J'skar will suddenly materialize. At this point, J'skar’s location becomes permanent and visible, allowing you to speak with him and complete the recommendation requirement. He will admit the prank was getting boring anyway and suggest you go tell Jeanne that you "found" him.
The Direct Approach: Using Detect Life and Dispel
For players who prefer not to engage in petty theft or social games, there is a more direct magical route to pinpointing J'skar's location. This requires two specific effects: Detect Life and Dispel Other.
Detect Life is perhaps the most useful tool for finding J'skar. While he is invisible, a Detect Life spell (or an item with this enchantment) will highlight his silhouette with a purple glow, making him easy to track as he moves through the basement. This confirms his exact location without the need for guesswork.
Once you have found the glowing outline, you can use a Dispel Other spell on him. It is important to note that a standard self-targeted Dispel will not work; it must be a projectile or touch-based Dispel directed at J'skar. If you do not have this spell, it is commonly sold at the Leyawiin Mages Guild by Alves Uvenim. Casting a successful Dispel on J'skar will immediately break his invisibility. He will be slightly annoyed that you ruined the fun, but he will accept the situation and remain visible, allowing the quest to move forward.
J'skar’s Daily Schedule and Services
Once J'skar is visible, his routine becomes much more predictable, making it easier to find him for training. J'skar is a basic trainer in Destruction, a vital skill for any aspiring battlemage.
His standard schedule in Bruma is as follows:
- 6 AM – 5 PM: He wanders the living quarters of the guild, offering training and gossip.
- 5 PM – 7 PM: He takes a break to eat, usually found at the dining table in the basement.
- 7 PM – 10 PM: He returns to wandering the basement halls.
- 10 PM – 6 AM: He sleeps in his designated bed in the southwestern room of the basement.
If you are looking for J'skar specifically for Destruction training, he is generally available at any time he isn't eating or sleeping. He is a Journeyman in the guild, so he can provide training up to level 40 in the Destruction skill tree. Additionally, players should keep an eye on his desk in the southwestern basement room. There, you can find the skill book The Wolf Queen, v 3, which provides a permanent boost to your Illusion skill—fitting, given J'skar’s affinity for hiding.
The Aftermath: J'skar in "A Plot Revealed"
J'skar's location remains the Bruma Mages Guild for a significant portion of the game, but this changes dramatically during the Mages Guild quest "A Plot Revealed." This is a pivotal moment in the storyline where the Bruma guild hall is attacked by the Order of the Black Worm.
When you arrive at the scene, the guild hall is in ruins and filled with undead. Most of the members you’ve befriended, including Volanaro and Jeanne, have been killed. J'skar, however, is the sole survivor. His location during the attack is again hidden by his mastery of invisibility. He remains cowering in the shadows of the destroyed guild hall, specifically near the entrance or tucked away in a corner of the main room.
After you clear out the Necromancers—specifically Camilla Lollia—J'skar will eventually reveal himself. He is visibly traumatized, having witnessed the King of Worms personally slaughtering his colleagues. He will describe seeing Volanaro’s soul being harvested. At this stage, J'skar is no longer a prankster; he is a witness to a massacre. He will tell you that he cannot stay in Bruma any longer and intends to flee to the Imperial City for protection.
Seeking Safety: J'skar at the Arcane University
After the events of "A Plot Revealed," J'skar’s location shifts to the Imperial City. If you follow him or wait a few days, you can find him at the Arcane University.
He is typically located in the Arch-Mage's Lobby. He spends his days sitting on the benches or pacing the lobby floor, still shaken by the events in Bruma. He continues to offer his Destruction training services here, though he will only do so after you have officially completed the "A Plot Revealed" quest by speaking to Arch-Mage Hannibal Traven.
While he is in the Imperial City, J'skar is no longer marked as an "essential" character in the game's code. This means that if he is attacked by a stray creature on the road between Bruma and the Imperial City, he can actually die. If you find that J'skar never arrives at the Arcane University, it is possible he met an unfortunate end on the Silver Road. Players who are particularly invested in keeping him alive might choose to escort him on his journey or fast-travel to the Imperial City and wait for him to arrive.
The Final Disappearance: The Bloodworm Helm
There is a critical technical detail regarding J'skar's location that many long-term players overlook. J'skar is scripted to be disabled from the game entirely once the quest "The Bloodworm Helm" is initiated.
When Arch-Mage Traven gives you the task to retrieve the Bloodworm Helm from Fort Teleman, the game triggers a script that removes J'skar from the Arcane University. He is effectively "deleted" to streamline the endgame's focus on the Necromancer war. Therefore, if you need Destruction training from J'skar or wish to interact with him one last time, you must do so before progressing to the Bloodworm Helm quest. Once he is gone, he cannot be found anywhere in the game world without the use of console commands.
Technical Fixes for J'skar’s Location Bugs
Occasionally, J'skar may suffer from AI pathing issues. In some cases, even after Volanaro dispels him, he might remain invisible or fail to appear in the basement. If you are playing on PC and J'skar is missing when he should be present, you can use the console to bring him to you.
By pressing the tilde key (~) and typing prid 0001CEF1 followed by moveto player, you can force J'skar to spawn at your current location. If he is still invisible, typing enable or using a Dispel spell on him should fix the issue.
For console players (Xbox/PlayStation), the best fix for a bugged J'skar location is to leave the Bruma Mages Guild, wait for 24 hours in a different cell (like an inn), and return. This often resets the NPC positions and allows the 10 PM event with Volanaro to trigger correctly.
Summary of J'skar’s Journey
Finding J'skar is more than just a simple map marker hunt; it is a lesson in the mechanics of Oblivion’s Radiant AI and spell effects.
- Early Game: He is in the Bruma Mages Guild basement, permanently invisible until the recommendation quest is solved via Volanaro's prank or a Dispel spell.
- Mid Game: He is a visible resident of Bruma, providing basic Destruction training and living in the southwestern basement room.
- The Attack: During the Necromancer raid, he is hiding (invisible) in the ruins of the Bruma hall.
- Late Game: He relocates to the Arch-Mage's Lobby in the Arcane University, Imperial City.
- The End: He is removed from the game once the Bloodworm Helm quest begins.
J'skar remains one of the most memorable NPCs in the Mages Guild questline, transitioning from a lighthearted prankster to a tragic survivor. Whether you are seeking him for a recommendation or for training in the destructive arts, knowing his specific location and the conditions of his visibility is key to a smooth experience in the frozen highlands of Bruma.
