Finding the Zhentarim Hideout in BG3: Password and Secret Loot
The Zhentarim Hideout is one of the most rewarding secret locations in Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3. Tucked away beneath a burning inn, this subterranean base serves as the local headquarters for the Black Network—a notorious mercenary and trade organization. Accessing this area provides not only a fast-travel point but also some of the strongest early-game ranged weapons, a companion quest for a struggling artist, and a shortcut to the Underdark. Navigating the hideout requires a mix of social finesse and careful exploration, as the Zhentarim are quick to turn hostile against uninvited guests.
Locating Waukeen’s Rest and the Shabby Door
The physical entrance to the hideout is located in the northwestern corner of the map at Waukeen's Rest. Upon arriving, the immediate focus is often the burning manor where Flaming Fist soldiers are attempting to rescue trapped nobles. However, the path to the Zhentarim lies just to the west of the main courtyard.
Look for a small, unassuming house at coordinates (X:-111, Y:611). The door is blocked by several wooden crates, which must be moved or destroyed to enter. Once inside, the atmosphere shifts from the chaos of the fire to a tense standoff. A lone man named Salazon stands guard near a trapdoor, clutching a torch next to several explosive wine barrels. If approached carelessly, he may ignite the barrels, potentially killing the party and destroying the entrance.
Obtaining the Password: Little Serpent, Long Shadow
While players can force their way in through intimidation or violence, the most seamless entry involves obtaining the secret password: "Little serpent, long shadow." This password is held by Rugan, a Zhentarim agent who can be found earlier on The Risen Road at coordinates (X:33, Y:610).
Rugan and his associate Olly are trapped inside a cave, besieged by a massive pack of gnolls led by the warlord Flind. Saving Rugan is the primary way to gain the Zhentarim’s trust. After the battle, players can use Persuasion or simply accept his thanks to receive the password. If Rugan has already perished, players can use the "Speak with Dead" spell on his corpse to extract the secret phrase.
If arriving at the hideout without the password, Salazon will trigger a dialogue check. Players can use a DC 10 Dexterity check to snatch his torch, or a DC 11 Intelligence/Detect Thoughts check to pull the password from his mind. Successfully navigating this dialogue rewards the player with the Engraved Key, which is used to unlock the wardrobe at the back of the basement.
Navigating the Basement Wardrobe
After descending the hatch next to Salazon, the party enters a small storage cellar filled with mundane items. The true entrance is a hidden door disguised as a wardrobe at (X:382, Y:-259). Interacting with the wardrobe using the Engraved Key—or successfully picking the lock with a DC 12 Sleight of Hand check—reveals a hidden staircase.
This staircase leads down into the main Zhentarim Hideout. Upon first descent, players are usually stopped by Zarys, the leader of this cell. If the password was used or if Rugan was saved, she will be wary but neutral. If the party arrives under suspicious circumstances, a high-stakes dialogue sequence begins. Bringing back the missing shipment unopened is the single best way to ensure a warm welcome and access to the organization's best services.
The "Find the Missing Shipment" Quest Dynamics
The central conflict of the Zhentarim Hideout revolves around a locked iron chest containing a mysterious item. This quest presents three primary paths, each with distinct consequences for the player's relationship with the Black Network:
- The Professional Path: Deliver the chest to Zarys completely unopened. This grants the highest level of trust, the rare "Harold" crossbow, and expands the inventory of the trader Brem.
- The Rogue Path: Open the chest to find the Iron Flask. Inside is a level 5 Spectator (Beholder-kin) that will immediately attack. While the flask can be used as a powerful throwable weapon in later acts, opening it or stealing the contents makes Zarys hostile and locks the player out of the Zhentarim’s better trades.
- The Middle Ground: Persuade Rugan to sell the shipment elsewhere and split the profits. This requires high Charisma but leads to a darker outcome where Zarys captures and tortures Rugan for his betrayal. To regain her trust, she may demand the player execute Rugan themselves.
Brem’s Expanded Stock: The Power of the Titanstring Bow
The merchant Brem is perhaps the most valuable NPC in the hideout. Initially, his inventory is limited to basic dyes and tools. However, once Zarys is satisfied with the return of the shipment, he unlocks a "Special Stock" that contains some of the most specialized gear in Act 1.
- Titanstring Bow: This is a meta-defining weapon for any character with high Strength. It adds the user's Strength modifier to the damage roll of its arrows. Combined with Elixirs of Hill Giant Strength, this bow can carry a Ranger or Rogue through the entire game.
- The Jolty Vest: A piece of medium armor that provides a chance to shock attackers when the wearer has Lightning Charges. Excellent for builds focused on the Lightning Charge mechanic.
- Giantbreaker: A heavy crossbow that inflicts "Reeling" on enemies, making it harder for them to land hits.
- Gloves of Thievery: These provide Advantage on Sleight of Hand checks, making them an essential tool for any party's designated lockpicker.
Freeing the Artist: Oskar Fevras
In the back of the hideout, players will find a frantic human named Oskar Fevras. He is a talented painter being held as a "pet" by the Zhentarim. Rescuing him initiates the quest "Free the Artist," which continues in Act 3 in the city of Baldur’s Gate.
To free Oskar, players can buy him from Brem for 1,000 gold. A successful Persuasion or Intimidation check can lower this price to 600 gold. Alternatively, if the player decides to wipe out the Zhentarim hideout in combat, Oskar can be freed from his cage at no cost. Once freed, giving him an additional 200 gold for his journey is optional but allows his story to progress later in the campaign.
The Secret Lift to the Underdark
One of the most overlooked features of the Zhentarim Hideout is its secret elevator to the Underdark. This provides an alternative to the more dangerous routes through the Goblin Camp or the Auntie Ethel's hag lair.
To find the lift, head to the back of the hideout near the wolf pens at (X:270, Y:-185). There is an illusionary wall that characters can walk straight through if they pass a passive Perception check. Behind this wall is a mechanical lift.
The lift is guarded by a Zhentarim member named Karad. He holds the Mechanical Key required to operate the elevator. Players can pickpocket this key or loot it from his body. Using this lift brings the party down to the storage area of the Selûnite Outpost in the Underdark, placing them in a prime position to explore the deeper reaches of the map.
Tactical Considerations and Hostility
The Zhentarim are highly defensive. The hideout is littered with oil surfaces and flammable barrels. If combat breaks out, the Zhentarim will often use fire arrows to ignite the entire floor, causing massive AoE damage.
If players intend to fight the Zhentarim, it is recommended to position characters on the high ground walkways before initiating the encounter. Stealthily moving the oil barrels away or using a character with "Create Water" can help mitigate the fire risk. However, it is generally advised to stay on their good side at least until the Titanstring Bow and other rare items have been purchased, as these become unavailable if the merchants are killed.
Essential Loot and Hidden Treasures
Beyond the quest rewards, the hideout contains several locked iron gates guarding valuable chests.
- The Eastern Cell: Contains the "Abyss Beckoners" gloves, which allow summoned creatures to resist all damage except psychic but force them to make Wisdom saves or go Mad.
- Infernal Iron: Found in a trapped chest at the back of the hideout. This is a critical item for Karlach’s companion quest and for crafting specialized armor at Dammon’s forge.
- Buried Chest: Located at (X:319, Y:-214), containing a decent amount of gold and random gems.
By carefully managing the relationship with Zarys and successfully navigating the "Missing Shipment" quest, players can turn this den of thieves into one of their most useful hubs in the early game. Whether for the shortcut to the Underdark or the top-tier archery gear, the Zhentarim Hideout remains a mandatory stop for any thorough playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3.
