Free Orpheus BG3: How to Get the Hammer and Open the Cage
The fate of the Githyanki Prince Orpheus is arguably the most significant narrative pivot in the final act of Baldur’s Gate 3. Held captive within the Astral Prism by the Emperor, Orpheus serves as the engine for your protection against the Absolute’s psychic influence. However, freeing him requires a specific legendary tool—the Orphic Hammer—and a willingness to face one of the most dangerous devils in the Nine Hells. This breakdown covers the precise steps to secure the hammer, infiltrate the House of Hope, and the eventual consequences of breaking those infernal chains.
The Catalyst: Finding the Orphic Hammer
To free Orpheus, the party must obtain the Orphic Hammer. There are two primary ways to secure this weapon during Act 3, and both involve the cambion Raphael. You will typically encounter Raphael at Sharess’ Caress in Wyrm’s Crossing, where he presents a deal: the Orphic Hammer in exchange for the Crown of Karsus once the Elder Brain is defeated.
The Devil’s Deal
Signing the soul-sworn contract is the fastest way to get the hammer. Raphael hands it over immediately, and the quest to free Orpheus moves forward. However, this binds your soul to a devil. If you choose this path, you can later attempt to break the contract by infiltrating the House of Hope, but if you fail to destroy the physical document before the game ends, the consequences for the realm are dire.
The Great Heist
Most players prefer to steal the hammer directly from Raphael’s personal domain in Avernus. This path is significantly more difficult but yields some of the best loot in the game. To begin the heist, you must visit the Devil’s Fee in the Lower City and speak with Helsik, a diabolist who knows how to open a portal to the House of Hope.
Entering the House of Hope
Helsik will open the portal for a steep price (20,000 gold, though it can be negotiated down or waived if you promise to bring her the Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength from the house). Once you have the ritual items and the instructions, head to the second floor of the Devil's Fee to arrange the items on the floor ritual circle:
- Skull: Bottom center.
- Coin of Mammon: Bottom left.
- Diamond: Top left.
- Incense: Top right.
- Infernal Marble: Center.
Stepping through the portal transports you to the House of Hope. It is vital to remember that once you enter, you cannot leave until the Orphic Hammer is secured and Raphael is dealt with.
Navigating the House and Securing the Hammer
Inside the House of Hope, you will meet Hope, an imprisoned spirit who guides you. To find the Orphic Hammer, you need to reach the Archive on the western side of the mansion.
The Archivist and the Invitation
The Archive is guarded by an Archivist. While you can fight your way through, a more subtle approach involves passing a series of skill checks to convince him you are a high-ranking official or an inquisitor. This allows you to explore the Archive freely. However, the hammer itself is protected by a magical barrier.
To lift the barrier, you need to enter the Boudoir, located just past the Archive. Inside, you will encounter Haarlep, a desire demon who took Raphael’s form. You must either defeat Haarlep or engage in their "game" to obtain the key to Raphael’s safe. The safe is hidden behind a painting in the Boudoir and contains the words needed to dispel the barrier around the Orphic Hammer.
Taking the Prize
Once you return to the Archive and use the password, you can take the Orphic Hammer. Doing so triggers the house’s alarms. All NPCs in the House of Hope will become hostile, and the layout will fill with hellish fires and vengeful spirits. This is also the best time to head to the basement and use the hammer to free Hope from her physical chains, as she becomes a powerful Cleric ally for the upcoming boss fight.
The Showdown: Defeating Raphael
As you attempt to exit through the portal in the foyer, Raphael will arrive to stop you. This is one of the most complex encounters in the game. Raphael has 666 HP and is accompanied by Yurgir (if you haven't convinced him to switch sides via a DC 30 Persuasion check) and Korrilla.
- Soul Pillars: There are four Soul Pillars in the corners of the room. Raphael draws power from these to cast devastating fire spells and enhance his melee attacks. Use force damage or high-output martial attacks to destroy these pillars early in the fight.
- Control Spells: Despite his power, Raphael is susceptible to certain crowd-control effects. Spells like Hold Monster or Otto’s Irresistible Dance can be highly effective, though his saving throws are high.
- Radiant Consumption: Be cautious with Radiant damage; Raphael has a passive ability that punishes attackers using Radiant energy with a heavy stun/burn effect.
Defeating Raphael grants you the Helldusk Armor and the satisfaction of having secured the hammer without a soul-binding contract.
When to Actually Free Orpheus
Owning the Orphic Hammer does not mean you can free Orpheus immediately. You must progress the main story until you confront the Elder Brain at the end of Act 3. After the initial failed attempt to dominate the brain, the Emperor will pull you into the Astral Prism.
This is the moment of truth. The Emperor will insist that the only way to defeat the Netherbrain is for a Mind Flayer to consume Orpheus's brain and use his power. If you have the Orphic Hammer, you can refuse the Emperor.
- Declaring Intent: Tell the Emperor you intend to free the Prince. The Emperor will promptly leave the Prism to join the Netherbrain, viewing your choice as a death sentence.
- Shattering the Crystals: Use the Orphic Hammer to strike the two large crystals binding Orpheus.
- The Conversation: Once freed, Orpheus will express his frustration with your choices (especially if you used tadpoles), but he will prioritize the destruction of the Brain.
The Sacrifice: Who Becomes the Mind Flayer?
Freeing Orpheus introduces a final mechanical hurdle. Even with Orpheus free, someone must be a Mind Flayer to wield the Netherstones against the Brain. You are presented with a few choices:
- Orpheus Sacrifices Himself: Orpheus will volunteer to become a Mind Flayer to save his people. This allows your party to remain human but results in the Githyanki prince losing his soul and needing to be euthanized or leaving his people without their true leader.
- The Player Sacrifices Themselves: You can choose to undergo the transformation. This is a permanent narrative end for your character’s humanity but saves Orpheus as a Githyanki.
- Karlach’s Sacrifice: If Karlach is in your party, she may offer to undergo the transformation, viewing it as a way to escape her engine’s terminal condition while still doing something heroic.
Strategic Considerations: Orpheus vs. The Emperor
Deciding to free Orpheus is a choice between a calculated, manipulative ally (The Emperor) and a righteous, potentially hostile revolutionary (Orpheus).
Benefits of Siding with Orpheus
- Lae’zel’s Approval: This is the culmination of her character arc. Freeing the Prince allows her to lead a rebellion against the lich-queen Vlaakith.
- Powerful Ally: In the final battle, Orpheus acts as a high-level Monk with unique protective abilities, including a powerful dome that shields allies from psychic damage.
- Narrative Satisfaction: For many, this is the "heroic" path that resolves the Githyanki civil war.
Drawbacks
- Losing the Emperor: You lose the Emperor’s tactical support and his presence in the final battle (he actually becomes an enemy you must fight).
- The Transformation Cost: Unless you want Orpheus to become the monster he hates, one of your party members must lose their soul to the Illithid transformation.
Freeing Orpheus represents the peak of player agency in Baldur’s Gate 3. Whether you do it through a desperate deal with a devil or a daring heist in the Hells, the act of swinging the Orphic Hammer changes the landscape of the Forgotten Realms forever. Ensure your party is at least level 11 or 12 before attempting the House of Hope, and carry plenty of fire resistance potions—you’ll need them.
