Frenzied Flame Ending: How to Burn It All Down in Elden Ring
The Lands Between offers many paths to lordship, but none are as absolute or as devastating as the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending. Often considered the "chaos" or "bad" ending by the community, this choice represents a total rejection of the Golden Order and the Greater Will. Instead of mending the Elden Ring or ushering in a new age of stars, the player chooses to melt away all that divides and distinguishes, returning the world to a primordial state of singular, burning chaos.
Achieving this ending is not merely a narrative choice made at the final boss; it is a grueling journey through the deepest, most claustrophobic corners of Leyndell and requires navigating one of the most infamous platforming challenges in modern gaming. For those determined to see the world burn, here is the comprehensive path to the Three Fingers.
The Philosophy of Chaos and the Three Fingers
In the lore of Elden Ring, the Frenzied Flame is the manifestation of cosmic despair. While the Two Fingers serve the Greater Will and seek to preserve order, the Three Fingers represent the antithesis. The ideology, championed by NPCs like Shabriri and Hyetta, suggests that life is a mistake born of a fracture in the "One Great." By unleashing the Frenzied Flame, the Tarnished becomes a vessel for an Outer God that seeks to end all suffering by ending all individuality.
This ending is unique because it takes precedence over almost all others. If you have been branded by the Three Fingers, you are locked into this conclusion unless you perform a specific, high-difficulty ritual to cleanse the flame. Furthermore, this path significantly alters your relationship with Melina, leading to some of the most emotionally charged dialogue in the game.
Reaching the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds
The road to the Frenzied Flame begins in the sewers of Leyndell, Royal Capital. This area, known as the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds, is a labyrinthine nightmare of pipes, Omens, and sludge.
To find the entrance, start at the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace. Head down the stairs and jump over the railing on the left into the ruined section of the city. Look for a well—the only one you can climb into. Descending this well brings you into the heart of the sewers.
Navigating this area is notoriously difficult. You will eventually want to reach the Underground Roadside Site of Grace, which serves as your central hub. From here, you must navigate the massive pipes and dodge the lethal Omen enemies until you find an elevator that leads deep into the foundations of the city. Your ultimate goal is a vast, cathedral-like chamber known as the Cathedral of the Forsaken.
Defeating Mohg, the Omen
Before you can access the Frenzied Flame, you must face Mohg, the Omen. Note that this is a projection of the Lord of Blood found in Mohgwyn Palace, but he still poses a significant threat. He is immune to bleed damage—a cruel irony given his lore—and uses heavy blood-flame attacks.
Once Mohg is defeated, a Site of Grace will appear. However, the path forward remains hidden. Approach the altar behind the chest in the boss room and strike it. The wall will vanish, revealing a secret passage that leads even deeper into the earth. This is the point where many players begin to understand the true cost of this ending.
The Descent: The Platforming Challenge
Behind the illusory wall lies a vertical shaft filled with the corpses of the Great Caravan—merchants who were buried alive after being accused of heretical beliefs. Their despair is what originally summoned the Frenzied Flame.
To reach the bottom, you must perform a series of precise jumps across protruding stone slabs and coffins. This is arguably more difficult than many boss fights in the game.
Tips for the Descent:
- Do not rush. Observe the positioning of the corpses; they often mark the safest platforms.
- Use back-steps. Sometimes a neutral back-step (pressing the dodge button without a directional input) provides a more consistent jump distance than a forward hop.
- Heavy attacks. Using a jumping heavy attack can sometimes help "stick" your landing by reducing the momentum that would otherwise cause you to slide off a narrow ledge.
Once you reach the very bottom, the floor will give way, dropping you into the Frenzied Flame Proscription. Here, you will find a Site of Grace and a massive, scorched stone door that looks like a set of melted fingers.
The Brand of the Three Fingers
Standing before the door, you will find that you cannot open it. If you have been following the questline of Hyetta (the blind maiden who eats Shabriri Grapes), she will be waiting here to give you the final hint.
To enter the chamber of the Three Fingers, you must strip your character of all armor. Only in your most vulnerable state can you be embraced by chaos. Once you are unequipped, approach the door and the "Open" prompt will appear.
In the ensuing cutscene, your character is grabbed and branded by the Three Fingers. Your eyes will glow with a yellow flame, and your skin will be permanently charred with fingerprint burns. At this point, you have inherited the Frenzied Flame.
Melina’s Reaction and the Timing of the Burn
The moment you are branded, Melina will appear at the nearest Site of Grace to confront you. She will plead with you to reconsider, and if you do not, she will abandon you. This removes her as your maiden and changes the mechanics of the final act of the game.
There are two variations of this path based on when you get branded:
- Branded Before the Forge of the Giants: If you inherit the flame before reaching the Forge in the Mountaintops, you will use your own body as kindling to burn the Erdtree instead of sacrificing Melina. This "saves" her life, but she vows to track you down and deliver "Destined Death" for your betrayal.
- Branded After the Forge of the Giants: If you allow Melina to sacrifice herself to burn the Erdtree and then go down to inherit the flame, she is already gone. You still get the ending, but you miss out on the final, haunting cinematic featuring Melina in the scorched world.
Most lore hunters recommend being branded before the Forge to witness the full narrative weight of the decision.
Associated Quests: Shabriri and Hyetta
While not strictly required to get the ending, two NPCs provide the necessary context for why anyone would choose this path.
Shabriri: Occupying the body of the noble Bloody Finger Hunter Yura, Shabriri can be found near the Zamor Ruins in the Mountaintops of the Giants. He is the one who explicitly tells you about the path beneath the capital and suggests that inheriting the flame is the only way to save Melina from the fire. His manipulation is a key part of the tragedy.
Hyetta: Her quest involves finding "Shabriri Grapes" (which are actually eyeballs) throughout Liurnia and the Altus Plateau. Following her quest to its conclusion at the Frenzied Flame Proscription rewards you with the Frenzied Flame Seal, which scales with Faith and boosts madness-based incantations. She eventually becomes your Finger Maiden of Chaos.
How to Reverse the Frenzied Flame Ending
One of the most common questions is whether this ending can be undone. Perhaps you reached the bottom of the sewers out of curiosity and opened the door without realizing the consequences. Because the Frenzied Flame locks out all other endings (including the Age of Stars and the standard Elden Lord endings), being branded can feel like a trap.
To reverse it, you must complete the most difficult questline in the game: Millicent’s journey.
- Follow Millicent’s Quest: You must assist Millicent from Caelid all the way to the Miquella’s Haligtree.
- Defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella: You must defeat the hardest boss in the game. After the fight, a large scarlet bloom will appear in the arena.
- Obtain Miquella’s Needle: Use the Unalloyed Gold Needle (given by Millicent or retrieved after her quest concludes) on Malenia’s bloom to receive Miquella’s Needle.
- Visit Dragonlord Placidusax’s Arena: This needle can only be used in one specific location: the heart of the storm in Crumbling Farum Azula, where the Dragonlord Placidusax resides.
- Use the Needle: You do not actually have to defeat the Dragonlord to use the needle, though the boss fight will trigger if you move too far into the arena. Simply entering the arena and using the item from your inventory will cleanse the Frenzied Flame.
Once cleansed, your eyes will return to normal (though the burn scars remain), and you will be eligible for the other endings again. However, Melina will not return to you; her bridge is burned permanently.
The Ending Cinematic: What Happens?
After defeating the final boss, Elden Beast, you will no longer have the option to "Mend the Elden Ring." Instead, you will see the prompt to "Become the Lord of Frenzied Flame."
In the final cutscene, your head is replaced by a massive, roaring sun of yellow chaos flame. You walk toward the Erdtree and unleash the fire, causing the tree and the entire world to erupt in a blinding, chaotic conflagration. The screen fades to black (or white, depending on the version), signaling the end of the world as it was known.
If Melina was still alive when you burned the Erdtree, an extra scene plays. She is seen walking through a landscape of gray ash. She picks up a whistle—the remains of Torrent—which dissolves into dust. She opens her previously closed eye, which is now a deep violet, and promises to deliver Destined Death to the Lord of Chaos.
Is the Frenzied Flame Ending "Right" for Your Character?
Choosing the Frenzied Flame ending is a commitment to a specific narrative experience. It is the most "complete" in terms of cinematic content and has a profound impact on the game world's lore. If you are a completionist, you will eventually need to do this for the achievement/trophy.
From a gameplay perspective, inheriting the flame gives you access to powerful madness incantations and the Frenzied Flame Seal. However, the social cost—losing Melina and locking yourself out of other narratives—is high.
Whether you are doing it to save Melina from her fate at the Forge, or because you genuinely believe the world of Elden Ring is too broken to be mended, the path to the Lord of Frenzied Flame is a haunting, unforgettable journey into the depths of the Lands Between. Just remember: once you embrace the three fingers, the world will never be the same again.
