Retrieving the Elder Scroll (Dragon) is a pivotal moment in the Skyrim main storyline. This specific artifact is the only key to peering through the Time Wound at the Throat of the World to learn the Dragonrend shout, the essential tool for grounding Alduin. The quest Elder Knowledge is notorious for its length, spanning from the frozen peaks of High Hrothgar to the deepest subterranean Dwemer cities. Navigating this journey requires patience, a healthy supply of potions, and a solid understanding of Dwemer mechanics.

Essential Preparations for the Depths

Before embarking on this quest, inventory management is the first priority. The path through Alftand and Blackreach leads to a massive amount of Dwemer scrap metal, which is invaluable for smithing but exceptionally heavy. It is advisable to enter this quest with at least 150 points of free carry weight. Bringing a follower is highly recommended, not just for combat support against Falmer, but as a "pack mule" for the heavy loot found in the ruins.

From a combat perspective, enemies in this quest range from Dwarven Automatons to Falmer and their Chaurus pets. Dwarven Spheres and Centurions are resistant to frost and poison, making shock damage and mace-based physical attacks more effective. For those playing on higher difficulties, ensure you have multiple Soul Gems, as you will encounter many enchanted items and traps that require recharging or specialized resistance.

Tracing the Scroll: From Winterhold to the Ice Fields

The quest begins after speaking with Paarthurnax. The dragon suggests that either Esbern or Arngeir might know the location of an Elder Scroll. Both will point toward the College of Winterhold.

Upon arriving at the College, access is restricted if the Dragonborn is not already a member. Faralda stands at the bridge; she can be bypassed by demonstrating a shout (proving Dragonborn status), casting a specific spell, or a high-level persuasion check. Once inside, the goal is the Arcanaeum to speak with Urag gro-Shub. The Orc librarian is protective of his collection and initially dismissive. However, mentioning the Dragonborn status prompts him to provide two books: Effects of the Elder Scrolls and Ruminations on the Elder Scrolls.

Reading Ruminations reveals it to be nearly incomprehensible. This triggers an objective to find the author, Septimus Signus. His outpost is located far north of the College, hidden within a small ice cave amidst the glacial floes. Septimus, though mentally unstable, provides the two items necessary for the mission: the Attunement Sphere and the Blank Lexicon. He explains that the Elder Scroll is housed within the Tower of Mzark, accessible through the massive underground complex of Blackreach.

Navigating Alftand: The Gateway to the Deep

Alftand is the most common entry point for Blackreach during this quest. Located southwest of Winterhold, it consists of three primary sections: the Glacial Ruins, the Animonculory, and the Cathedral.

The Glacial Ruins and Animonculory

The initial tunnels are relatively straightforward but filled with the remnants of a failed expedition. Following the blood splatters and journals leads to the Dwemer structures. In the Animonculory, players must navigate narrow walkways and avoid spinning blade traps.

There is a specific descent in this area where the ramps are broken. One must carefully drop down onto pipes and lower ledges. It is possible to use the "Become Ethereal" shout to bypass the falling damage, though caution is needed to avoid landing in the middle of a Falmer camp. The Falmer here use poisoned weapons; having "Cure Poison" potions or high poison resistance gear can prevent a quick death in the dark.

The Alftand Cathedral

The Cathedral is the final gate before Blackreach. This area features a significant encounter with a Dwarven Centurion. For ranged builds, using the elevated walkways to snipe the Centurion while it remains on the lower floor is a safe tactic. Once defeated, the Centurion Key allows access to the final chamber where two NPCs, Sulla Trebatius and Umana, are locked in a fight. It is often more efficient to wait for them to injure each other before intervening.

In the center of this room is the Dwarven Mechanism. Placing the Attunement Sphere on the pedestal activates the staircase leading down into the heart of Blackreach.

Surviving the Bioluminescent Wilds of Blackreach

Blackreach is one of the most visually stunning yet dangerous locations in Skyrim. It is a massive cavern that connects several Dwemer ruins. For the purposes of Elder Knowledge, the goal is the Tower of Mzark, located in the southwest corner of the cavern.

While it is tempting to explore the entire area—especially to collect Crimson Nirnroot for the quest A Return to Your Roots—staying on the main path is safer for those focused solely on the Elder Scroll. Follow the cobblestone roads and avoid the center of the cavern where a Giant and a Dwarven Centurion often patrol.

If the Dragonborn possesses the "Unrelenting Force" shout, there is a hidden encounter here: shouting at the large yellow glowing orb hanging over the Silent City will summon the dragon Vulthuryol. However, this is an optional challenge and may be too difficult if resources are already low after the Alftand trek.

Locate the "Great Lift of Alftand" near the entrance to ensure a quick exit to the surface later. Then, head toward the waypoint marking the Tower of Mzark. The lift inside the tower will take the player directly to the Oculory.

The Oculory Puzzle: Unlocking the Scroll

The Tower of Mzark houses a massive Dwemer machine designed to read the Elder Scrolls. Solving this puzzle is the final step in the quest.

  1. Placement: Approach the control console on the upper platform. Place the Blank Lexicon into the Lexicon Stand on the far right. This causes the machine to activate and two buttons to become available.
  2. The Sequence: The buttons are numbered here from right to left for clarity (1 being far right, 4 being far left).
    • Press the second button from the right (Button 3) four times. This rotates the lenses and causes the Lexicon to glow. The middle buttons will now open.
    • Press the second button from the left (Button 2) twice. This aligns the overhead lenses and focuses the light beams onto the central sphere.
    • The far-left button (Button 1) will now become active. Press it once.
  3. Completion: The overhead containment unit will descend and open, revealing the Elder Scroll (Dragon).

Before grabbing the scroll, remember to take the Runed Lexicon back from the stand. This item is required to complete Septimus Signus's quest, Discerning the Transmundane, which ultimately leads to the Ogrema Infinium, a powerful artifact for skill leveling.

Finalizing the Mission

With the Elder Scroll in hand, the player can use the elevator within the Tower of Mzark to return directly to the surface of Skyrim, bypassing the need to trek back through Blackreach and Alftand. The exit leads to a small Dwemer structure in the snowy peaks. From here, fast travel back to the Throat of the World is the next logical step.

Returning to the Time Wound with the scroll allows the Dragonborn to view the events of the past. This cinematic sequence teaches the Dragonrend shout, effectively ending the search for Elder Knowledge and transitioning into the battle against Alduin.

This quest represents the peak of Skyrim's environmental storytelling, blending ancient lore with complex level design. Successfully navigating it not only provides the means to defeat the World-Eater but also opens up the vast resources of the Dwemer ruins for future crafting and exploration.
