How to Join the Dark Brotherhood on Skyrim and Start the Questline
Establishing a presence within the most feared organization in Tamriel is a rite of passage for many players. The Dark Brotherhood represents the pinnacle of clandestine operations, offering a narrative experience that blends moral ambiguity with high-stakes gameplay. Joining this faction is not as simple as walking into a guild hall; it requires specific actions that trigger a sequence of events, ultimately leading to a secret sanctuary hidden in the forests of Falkreath. This process involves navigating rumors, executing a high-profile target, and making a pivotal decision under duress.
The Legend of the Black Sacrament
In the lore of Skyrim, the Dark Brotherhood is contacted through the Black Sacrament—a ritual involving human remains and a specific incantation. While common citizens fear even speaking of it, rumors are the lifeblood of an aspiring assassin. To begin the journey, the primary goal is to locate a young boy in Windhelm who is actively attempting to summon the brotherhood.
There are several ways to initiate this phase. Speaking with innkeepers across Skyrim often yields rumors about Aventus Aretino. These NPCs will mention that the boy has escaped from an orphanage in Riften and is performing a dark ritual in his family home. Alternatively, visiting Riften and speaking with the children at Honorhall Orphanage will reveal that Aventus ran away to seek revenge against Grelod the Kind. If those paths are bypassed, simply walking the streets of Windhelm near the Aretino residence will often trigger a conversation between locals regarding the strange sounds coming from the house.
Finding Aventus Aretino in Windhelm
The Aretino residence is located in the city of Windhelm, near the entrance to the residential district. The door is locked with a Novice-level lock, making it accessible even to characters with no investment in the Lockpicking skill. Once inside, the atmosphere shifts noticeably. The house is cold, dimly lit, and filled with the candles and bones necessary for the Black Sacrament.
Upon entering the upstairs room, Aventus Aretino will be seen chanting. He will mistake any intruder for a Dark Brotherhood assassin. To progress, it is necessary to speak with him and accept his contract. The target is Grelod the Kind, the headmistress of Honorhall Orphanage in Riften. Aventus seeks her death due to the alleged mistreatment of children under her care. Accepting this task initiates the quest "Innocence Lost."
Executing the Contract: Innocence Lost
Traveling to Riften leads to Honorhall Orphanage. Grelod the Kind is a unique NPC in that she has only one health point. This allows for a wide variety of execution methods, regardless of a character's level or combat proficiency.
For those specializing in stealth, waiting until nightfall allows for a clean kill while the children and the assistant, Constance Michel, are asleep. However, the game mechanics treat Grelod’s death differently than standard murders. If Grelod is killed in broad daylight in front of the children, they will not report the crime; instead, they will cheer. Despite this, a public execution may still draw the attention of Riften guards if they are within line of sight, though typically no bounty is added to the player's head for this specific kill.
After the deed is done, returning to Aventus Aretino in Windhelm completes the quest. He will reward the effort with the Aretino Family Heirloom, a valuable item for early-game gold generation. While the quest ends here, the actual process of joining the brotherhood has only just begun.
The Courier and the Mysterious Note
Following the completion of "Innocence Lost," the next phase is passive. The game requires a period of time to pass—usually twenty-four to forty-eight in-game hours. During this interval, players should travel between major cities. Eventually, a courier will approach with a letter.
The note is iconic: a black handprint with the text "We Know." This indicates that the Dark Brotherhood has observed the unauthorized assassination of Grelod the Kind. Receiving this note is the final prerequisite for the abduction event. If the courier does not appear, waiting or sleeping in a city hub often forces the spawn of the NPC.
The Abduction: With Friends Like These...
Once the "We Know" note is in the inventory, the player must find a bed to sleep in. This can be at an inn, a player-owned home, or even a bedroll in a cleared dungeon. The duration of sleep does not matter; one hour is sufficient.
Upon waking, the character will find themselves not in their bed, but in an Abandoned Shack in the marshes of Hjaalmarch. Perched on a nearby shelf is Astrid, the leader of the Dark Brotherhood's Skyrim sanctuary. She explains that by killing Grelod, a debt was created. A contract was stolen from the Brotherhood, and that debt must be repaid in blood.
In the center of the room, three captives are bound and hooded: Gasha, Alea Quintus, and Vasha. Astrid demands that at least one of them be executed. This is the critical junction. To join the Dark Brotherhood, one must fulfill Astrid's request and kill one, two, or all three of the captives. It does not matter which one is chosen, as the game does not provide a "correct" answer regarding which captive has a contract on their head.
Speaking to the captives provides some context to their characters—one is a fearful mother, another a defiled mercenary, and the third a criminal with a dark past. From a roleplaying perspective, this choice defines the character's early relationship with the guild. Once the execution is carried out, Astrid will provide the password to the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary and invite the player to become an initiate.
The Falkreath Sanctuary and the Password
The Sanctuary is located to the west of Falkreath, tucked away in a rocky crevasse. The entrance is a black door adorned with a skull. When approached, the door will ask: "What is the music of life?"
The correct response, provided by Astrid at the shack, is: "Silence, my brother."
Entering the sanctuary marks the official start of the faction questline. Upon arrival, Astrid welcomes the new member into the "family." She also provides the Shrouded Armor set, which is arguably the most important early-game reward for any character focused on stealth and assassination.
Optimization for the Brotherhood: Skills and Perks
While any character can join the Dark Brotherhood, the questline is heavily optimized for certain playstyles. To maximize the effectiveness of the rewards provided, investing in specific skill trees is recommended.
The Sneak Tree
The foundation of an assassin is the Sneak skill. Specifically, the "Backstab" and "Assassin's Blade" perks are essential. The latter allows daggers to deal 15 times normal damage when performing a sneak attack. When combined with the Shrouded Gloves (which double sneak attack damage with one-handed weapons), a character can achieve a 30x damage multiplier. At higher levels, this allows for the one-shotting of even the most powerful bosses in the game.
The Illusion Tree
For those who prefer a more surgical approach, Illusion magic is invaluable. The "Quiet Casting" perk ensures that spells do not alert nearby enemies. Using "Muffle" and "Invisibility" allows an assassin to walk through heavily guarded areas unnoticed. Furthermore, the "Fury" or "Frenzy" spells can be used to make targets attack others, leading to their death without the player ever drawing a blade or receiving a bounty.
Archery
Many contracts take place in open areas where close-quarters combat is risky. The Archery tree, specifically the "Deadly Aim" perk, provides a 3x damage multiplier for sneak attacks with bows. This allows for long-range assassinations that keep the player well away from guard patrols.
Exclusive Rewards and Benefits
Joining the Dark Brotherhood provides access to unique items and followers that cannot be obtained anywhere else in Skyrim. These assets significantly alter the gameplay experience.
- Shadowmere: Following the quest "The Cure for Madness," players receive Shadowmere, a unique horse with high health and incredibly fast health regeneration. Unlike standard horses, Shadowmere will actively engage in combat and can serve as a formidable tank.
- The Blade of Woe: This unique dagger, held by Astrid, possesses a powerful Absorb Health enchantment. It is one of the highest base-damage daggers in the game.
- The Ancient Shrouded Armor: A superior version of the standard set, providing 100% poison resistance and increased damage for bows and one-handed attacks. This is obtained through a side objective later in the questline.
- Followers: After completing the main questline, the Dark Brotherhood Initiates become available as followers. These NPCs have no level cap, meaning they scale with the player indefinitely, making them some of the strongest companions in the game.
- Summon Ancient Assassin: A unique power that summons the ghost of a legendary assassin to fight alongside the player. This is particularly useful for crowd control during difficult encounters.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
There are several ways players unintentionally lock themselves out of the Dark Brotherhood experience. The most common is attacking Astrid in the Abandoned Shack. If Astrid is killed, the quest "Destroy the Dark Brotherhood!" begins. While this allows the player to wipe out the assassins and receive a gold reward from the Penitus Oculatus, it permanently prevents access to the Shrouded Armor, Shadowmere, and the entire Brotherhood narrative.
Another issue involves the courier. If a player is constantly fast-traveling to wilderness locations or staying in combat, the courier may be unable to reach them. If the "We Know" note has not arrived after a week of in-game time, it is best to stay within a major city like Whiterun or Solitude for a full day cycle.
The Role of the Night Mother
As the questline progresses, the focus shifts from Astrid’s leadership to the return of the Night Mother. She is the spiritual heart of the Brotherhood, and her arrival in a stone coffin marks a transition from a band of mercenaries back to a religious cult of assassins. Players eventually take on the role of the "Listener," the only individual capable of hearing the Night Mother’s commands. This role grants the player ultimate authority within the faction and leads to the most high-profile assassination contract in the history of the Elder Scrolls series.
The progression from a simple contract in an orphanage to the Listener of the Night Mother is one of the most rewarding narrative arcs in Skyrim. By following the steps from Windhelm to the Abandoned Shack, any traveler can transform into the most dangerous shadow in the North. Whether motivated by the lure of gold, the pursuit of power, or the thrill of the hunt, the Dark Brotherhood offers a path unlike any other in the province.
