How to Level Up and Optimize Stats in Elden Ring
Leveling up in Elden Ring is not an automatic process. Unlike traditional RPGs where you gain a level the moment an experience bar fills up, Elden Ring requires you to manually exchange a currency called Runes at a Site of Grace after meeting a specific NPC. To unlock the ability to level up, you must rest at three different "Open World" Sites of Grace, triggering a cutscene with Melina, who will then offer you the ability to "turn runes into strength."
Unlocking the Level Up Mechanic
The journey begins in Limgrave. You cannot level up the moment you step into the Lands Between. The game forces you to explore first. To trigger the appearance of Melina, your finger maiden, you need to find and rest at three Sites of Grace located in the overworld. Note that tutorial area sites or mini-dungeon sites (like those inside small caves) generally do not count toward this total.
The most common way to trigger this event is to follow the "Guidance of Grace"—the golden trails emanating from the sites—which lead you toward the Gatefront Ruins. Once you sit at the third site, Melina will appear. Accept her accord to receive the Spectral Steed Whistle (to summon your horse, Torrent) and the permanent ability to level up at any Site of Grace in the game.
The Economy of Runes
Runes serve as both experience points and currency. You earn them by defeating enemies, finding "Golden Runes" (consumable items in your inventory), or selling items to merchants.
Spending and Saving Runes
Every time you level up, the cost in Runes for the next level increases exponentially. This creates a gameplay loop where you must decide whether to push forward into a boss arena with a large hoard of Runes or return to a Site of Grace to spend them.
The Penalty of Death
If you die, your Runes remain at the spot of your demise as a glowing gold branch. You have one chance to retrieve them. If you die again before picking them up, those Runes are lost forever. In our testing, the most common mistake for new players is hoarding enough Runes for three levels and losing them all to a simple gravity mishap or an ambush. The best practice is to spend your Runes immediately once you have enough for a single level, especially before entering a fog wall.
Which Stats to Level First
In Elden Ring, your character's power comes from eight primary attributes. However, not all stats are created equal in the early game. Many beginners fall into the trap of dumping points into Strength or Intelligence because they want to deal more damage. In reality, weapon upgrades (using Smithing Stones) provide far more early-game damage than stat scaling does.
The Vigor First Strategy
If there is one "golden rule" for surviving the Lands Between, it is this: Level your Vigor. Vigor increases your total HP.
In our playthroughs, we found that reaching 20 Vigor is a necessity before even attempting the first major boss, Margit the Fell Omen. By the time you reach the mid-game areas like Liurnia or Caelid, aiming for 40 Vigor will prevent most enemies from "one-shotting" you. The difference between 10 Vigor (roughly 414 HP) and 40 Vigor (1450 HP) is a 250% increase in survivability. No amount of extra damage in the early game can compensate for such a massive boost in your margin for error.
Mind and Endurance
- Mind: Increases your FP (Focus Points). This is vital for mages but also for melee builds that rely heavily on powerful Weapon Arts (Ashes of War). If you find yourself constantly running out of blue juice, aim for 20-25 Mind.
- Endurance: Increases Stamina and Equip Load. If you want to wear heavy armor without "fat-rolling" (a slow, heavy dodge roll), you must level Endurance. For most builds, 20-30 Endurance is the sweet spot to maintain a Medium Roll while wearing decent protection.
Understanding Offensive Attributes
Once your survivability (Vigor) is stable, you can begin investing in the stats that allow you to use specific gear and spells.
Strength and Dexterity
These are the primary physical stats.
- Strength: Required for heavy weapons like Greatswords and Hammers. A unique mechanic in Elden Ring is that two-handing a weapon increases your effective Strength by 50%. For example, if a weapon requires 30 Strength, you can wield it effectively with only 20 Strength if you hold it with both hands.
- Dexterity: Required for faster weapons like Katanas, Spears, and Curved Swords. It also slightly reduces the casting time of spells and decreases fall damage.
Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane
These are the "casting" stats.
- Intelligence: Primarily for Glintstone Sorceries. It scales with staves.
- Faith: Primarily for Incantations (healing, fire, and lightning spells). It scales with Sacred Seals.
- Arcane: A versatile stat that increases "Discovery" (the drop rate of items) and scales with certain status-effect builds, particularly those focusing on Bleed (Hemorrhage), Poison, and Occult damage.
Stat Soft Caps and Diminishing Returns
Every stat in Elden Ring has "soft caps"—points where adding more levels provides significantly less benefit than before. Knowing these numbers is crucial for an optimized build.
- Vigor: The first soft cap is 40. The second is 60. Beyond 60, the HP gain per point is negligible.
- Mind: Soft caps around 50-60, though most players find 35-40 sufficient for a full mana bar that matches a +12 Cerulean Flask.
- Endurance: Stamina stops growing significantly at 50, but Equip Load continues to scale well until 60.
- Strength/Dexterity/Intelligence/Faith:
- 20: Early game requirement gate.
- 40: The first major damage drop-off.
- 60: The standard for a specialized build.
- 80: The final hard-soft cap. Beyond 80, points are almost always better spent elsewhere.
Fast Leveling and Rune Farming Locations
If you find yourself under-leveled for a boss, you can "farm" Runes. While the game encourages exploration, some areas are significantly more efficient than others.
The Greyoll Dragon Cheese (Early Game)
In North-Eastern Caelid (Dragonbarrow), there is a massive, stationary dragon named Greyoll surrounded by smaller dragons. By using a weapon with the "Bleed" status effect (like the Reduvia dagger or the Uchigatana), you can chip away at her massive health pool. Because Bleed deals a percentage of total health, even a level 1 character can kill her.
- The Reward: Roughly 75,000 to 100,000 Runes (depending on if you use a Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot).
- Pro Tip: If you jump on Torrent and race back to the nearby Fort Faroth Site of Grace the moment the dragon dies, you can rest before the death animation finishes. This allows you to keep the Runes while the dragon respawns, allowing for infinite farming.
The Mohgwyn Palace Approach (Mid to Late Game)
This is widely considered the best farming spot in the game. Accessible early via White Mask Varre’s questline, the "Palace Approach Ledge-Road" Site of Grace features a cliff overlooking a swamp.
- The Bird Farm: Use a bow to shoot the large crow across the chasm. It will aggro and run off the cliff, granting 11,000 Runes per death. This takes about 10 seconds.
- The Albinaurics: If you have an area-of-effect weapon (like the Sacred Relic Sword from the final boss), you can wipe out the dozens of resting Albinaurics on the hill for 40,000+ Runes every 15 seconds.
Respecing: How to Change Your Levels
Don't worry about "ruining" your character. After defeating Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon in Raya Lucaria Academy, you unlock the ability to "Rebirth." This allows you to reset your stats to your starting class's base levels and reallocate all your earned levels. You will need a rare item called a "Larval Tear" to perform this. There are about 18 Larval Tears per playthrough, so while you can experiment, you shouldn't waste them on minor tweaks.
Best Starting Classes for Leveling Efficiency
If you want the most "bang for your buck" when leveling, your starting class matters because it determines your base stats.
- Vagabond: The best for melee builds. It starts with high Vigor and no wasted points in Arcane or Intelligence.
- Samurai: Excellent for Dexterity and Bleed builds. Starts with the Uchigatana, one of the best weapons in the game.
- Astrologer: The go-to for pure sorcery.
- Hero: Optimized for pure Strength builds.
- Wretch: For those who want a blank slate (level 1 with 10 in every stat). While it seems versatile, it is often "sub-optimal" for specialized builds because it has points in stats you may never use.
Summary of Leveling Best Practices
To level effectively in Elden Ring, prioritize Vigor to 40 as quickly as possible. Meet the minimum requirements for your weapon of choice, then focus on Endurance to maintain a medium roll. Only dump points into damage-scaling stats (Str/Dex/Int/Fai) once your weapon is highly upgraded (+15 or higher), as the scaling bonus is weak on low-level gear. Use the Greyoll or Mohgwyn farms if you hit a wall, but remember that player skill and weapon upgrades are often more important than raw character levels.
FAQ
How many runes do I need for level 100? To reach level 100 from level 1, you need approximately 2.6 million total Runes. The cost of level 99 to 100 alone is about 64,000 Runes.
Is there a level cap in Elden Ring? The maximum level is 713, which occurs when every one of the eight attributes is at 99. However, most players finish the game between level 120 and 150.
Does leveling up make the game harder? No, enemies do not scale with your level in Elden Ring. However, in multiplayer, your level (and weapon upgrade level) determines who can summon you or invade you to ensure fair play.
What happens if I die while retrieving my Runes? If you die a second time before touching your previous "bloodstain," the original pile of Runes is deleted and replaced by a new, likely smaller pile from your most recent death.
Can I level up without Melina? No. You must accept Melina's accord to unlock the leveling menu at Sites of Grace. If you refuse her initially, she will wait at the Sites of Grace near the Gatefront for you to change your mind.
