How to Unlock Every Town NPC in Terraria
Unlocking all NPCs in Terraria is a core progression milestone that transforms a basic shelter into a functional hub of commerce, healing, and defense. Each NPC provides unique services, from the Goblin Tinkerer’s item reforging to the Steampunker’s environmental control tools. To populate a world fully, players must master building requirements, defeat specific bosses, and explore the furthest reaches of the map.
The Universal Requirement: Building Suitable Housing
Before any NPC can move in (with very few exceptions like the Traveling Merchant), the player must provide "Valid Housing." If a room does not meet the following strict criteria, it will remain empty regardless of whether the NPC’s unlock conditions are met.
Dimensional Requirements
A house must have a total frame size (including walls, floor, and ceiling) of at least 60 tiles, but less than 750 tiles. The most common efficient build is a rectangular room of 6 blocks high by 10 blocks wide.
Structural Components
- Enclosure: The room must be fully enclosed by solid blocks, platforms, or doors.
- Background Walls: These must be player-placed. Natural dirt or stone walls found in caves do not count and must be replaced.
- Light Source: At least one functioning light source (Torch, Candle, Lantern, Chandelier, etc.).
- Flat Surface Item: A Table, Workbench, Bathtub, Bookcase, or Piano.
- Comfort Item: A Chair, Bed, Sofa, or Toilet.
- Entrance: At least one door (including Trap Doors) or one platform in the floor/ceiling.
Environmental Safety
NPCs refuse to live in areas heavily influenced by the Corruption or the Crimson. If the "evil" biome spread exceeds a certain threshold near the house, it becomes invalid, and the resident will move out. Additionally, NPCs will only move into a house during the daytime and while the house is off-screen.
Pre-Hardmode NPC Requirements
The first phase of the game features 18 potential residents. Most are unlocked through world exploration or defeating early bosses.
1. The Guide
- Condition: Spawns automatically upon world creation.
- Function: He provides crafting recipes and tips. He is also essential for summoning the Wall of Flesh via the Guide Voodoo Doll.
2. The Merchant
- Condition: All players in the world must collectively have more than 50 Silver Coins in their inventories.
- Function: Sells basic survival gear like the Bug Net, Mining Helmet, and Piggy Bank.
3. The Nurse
- Condition: The player must have used at least one Life Crystal (increasing HP above 100) and the Merchant must already be present.
- Function: She restores health and removes debuffs for a fee. Her prices increase with her happiness and the player's progression.
4. The Demolitionist
- Condition: The player must have an explosive (Bomb, Grenade, or Dynamite) in their inventory and the Merchant must be present.
- Function: Sells various explosives. In Hardmode, he sells Hellfire Arrows.
5. The Dye Trader
- Condition: The player must find a Dye Item (like a Strange Plant or materials like Blue Berries) and have it in their inventory.
- Function: Exchanges Strange Plants for rare dyes and sells the Dye Vat.
6. The Angler
- Condition: Found sleeping on the surface of the Ocean (at the far left or right of the map). Simply interact with him to wake him up.
- Function: Provides daily fishing quests. He does not sell items but rewards players with unique fishing gear and accessories.
7. The Zoologist
- Condition: Fill at least 10% (53 entries) of the Bestiary.
- Function: Sells animal-themed vanity items, mounts (like the Mollusk Whistle), and the essential Critter Companionship book.
8. The Golfer
- Condition: Found in the Underground Desert biome. Interact with him to "rescue" him.
- Function: Sells golf-related equipment. His inventory expands as the player achieves higher golf scores.
9. The Dryad
- Condition: Defeat a major boss (Eye of Cthulhu, Eater of Worlds, Brain of Cthulhu, or Skeletron). King Slime does not count.
- Function: Sells nature-related items and can report the percentage of Corruption/Crimson/Hallow in the world. Her "Dryad’s Blessing" buff is invaluable for early-game defense.
10. The Painter
- Condition: There must be at least 8 other Town NPCs present in the world.
- Function: Sells paints, wallpaper, and paintings. His stock changes based on the biome he is currently living in.
11. The Arms Dealer
- Condition: The player must have a gun or bullets in their inventory.
- Function: Sells Musket Balls, Minisharks, and illegal gun parts (at night).
12. The Tavernkeep

- Function: Sells Dungeon Defenders 2 crossover items (sentries and armor) using Defender Medals.

- Condition: Found webbed up in a Spider Cave (Underground). Interact with her to free her.
- Function: Changes the player's hairstyle and sells unique hair dyes.
14. The Goblin Tinkerer
- Condition: Defeat the Goblin Army event. He is then found bound in the Cavern layer.
- Function: Perhaps the most important NPC, he allows "Reforging" to change item modifiers and sells the Tinkerer's Workshop.
15. The Witch Doctor
- Condition: Defeat the Queen Bee in the Jungle.
- Function: Sells blowguns and imbue stations. If housed in the Jungle, he sells Leaf Wings (Hardmode only) and Tiki Armor.
16. The Clothier

- Function: Sells vanity clothing. He is the human form of the Old Man at the Dungeon.
17. The Mechanic

Hardmode NPC Requirements
The transition to Hardmode (after defeating the Wall of Flesh) introduces 8 more NPCs who provide advanced technology and magic.
19. The Wizard
- Condition: Found bound in the Cavern layer after Hardmode begins.
- Function: Sells magical items like the Ice Rod, Crystal Balls, and Greater Mana Potions.
20. The Tax Collector

- Function: Periodically generates tax revenue from other NPCs, which the player can collect as gold.
21. The Truffle

24. The Cyborg
- Condition: Defeat Plantera.
- Function: Sells Proximity Mine Launchers, Rockets, and Nanites.
25. The Princess
- Condition: Moves in only when all other 27 standard NPCs (excluding Santa and pets) are present.

26. Santa Claus
- Condition: Defeat the Frost Legion (summoned by a Snow Globe). He only stays during the Christmas season (Dec 15 – Dec 31).

Special NPCs: Town Pets and Town Slimes
The 1.4 "Journey's End" and 1.4.4 "Labor of Love" updates introduced NPCs that do not count toward the Princess's requirement but provide companionship and contribute to the "Town" enemy-reduction effect.
Town Pets (Cat, Dog, Bunny)
- How to get: Once the Zoologist moves in, buy a Cat License, Dog License, or Bunny License from her. Use the license to have the pet move in the next day.
The 8 Town Slimes

- Cool Slime: Moves in during a naturally occurring Party.
- Elder Slime: Found in the Cavern layer inside a "Shaking Chest" (requires a Golden Key).

- Surly Slime: Fished up during a Blood Moon.

- Squire Slime: Drop a Copper Helmet or Copper Shortsword near a regular slime.
Expert Tips for Finding and Managing NPCs
The Lifeform Analyzer is Mandatory
For rescue-only NPCs (Wizard, Goblin Tinkerer, Mechanic, Golfer, Stylist, Tavernkeep), the Lifeform Analyzer (sold by the Traveling Merchant) is vital. It will display the NPC's name on your screen when they are nearby, even if they are behind walls or off-screen.
Efficient Searching with Hunter Potions
Hunter Potions highlight living creatures in red. This includes bound NPCs, making them much easier to spot in dark caves or the sprawling Jungle.
How to Move NPCs
Use the Housing Menu (found on the right side of the inventory screen above your armor slots). You can click an NPC's face icon and then click a house to assign them to that specific room. If they are off-screen at night or during rain, they will teleport to their assigned house instantly.
The Happiness System and Pylons
To maximize NPC efficiency, group them in their preferred biomes with neighbors they like.
- Happiness: Happy NPCs sell items for lower prices and buy yours for higher prices.
- Pylons: If two NPCs are happy and living near each other in their preferred biome, one of them will sell a "Pylon." Placing Pylons in different biomes allows you to teleport across the map instantly.
Shimmering NPCs
In version 1.4.4, throwing an NPC into a pool of Shimmer (found in the Aether biome) will permanently change their appearance to a "Shimmered" form. This is purely cosmetic but adds a unique flair to your town.

FAQ
Q: Why won't the NPC move in even though I met the requirements? A: Check three things: Is it daytime? Is the house "suitable" (use the Housing Query tool)? Is there an active event like a Blood Moon or Goblin Invasion? Events block NPCs from moving in.
Q: Can NPCs die? A: Yes. Enemies can kill them, and they can drown or fall into lava. However, they will always respawn the next day as long as their requirements are still met and a house is available.
Q: Does the Traveling Merchant need a house? A: No. He arrives randomly at 8:15 AM and leaves at 6:00 PM. He never takes up a permanent house.
Q: How do I get the Princess to move in? A: You must have all other 27 human town NPCs living in your world simultaneously. This excludes Santa, Town Pets, and Town Slimes.
