The Night Market is arguably the most unique event in Stardew Valley. Unlike the Egg Festival or the Feast of the Winter Star, this mid-winter gathering on the beach doesn't freeze time. From the 15th to the 17th of Winter, the docks transform into a neon-lit hub of commerce and deep-sea exploration. Because the clock keeps ticking, efficiency is the priority. Managing chores on the farm while maximizing the rare opportunities at the docks requires a clear understanding of what each boat offers.

Logistics and time management at the docks

Attending the event involves heading to the beach between 5 PM and 2 AM. A critical distinction of the Night Market is that while most festivals relocate your character to the start of the next day or a set time once you leave, here you simply walk home or use a warp. This means animals on the farm still need to be fed manually; the game does not automatically consider them fed during these three days.

For those staying until the very last second to fish or shop, the Shrouded Figure located near the entrance to Willy's Fish Shop offers a quick exit. For 250g, this NPC will warp you directly back to your farm house. It is a small price to pay for those extra 20 minutes of deep-sea fishing that might have otherwise resulted in a 2 AM collapse.

The deep-sea fishing submarine

One of the primary draws of the Night Market is the submarine anchored on the far left of the docks. For a fee of 1,000g, the captain takes the player down to a unique fishing area. The descent and ascent each take about 30 minutes of in-game time. Once the trapdoor opens, you have access to a pool of fish found nowhere else in the game without the use of Magic Bait.

Exclusive catches and probabilities

There are three fish specific to this submarine ride. Each has its own utility and difficulty level:

  • Midnight Squid: A common catch in the submarine, useful for certain recipes and requested in fish pond quests.
  • Spook Fish: A strange, transparent fish with a mid-range difficulty.
  • Blobfish: The most valuable catch here. It has a high selling price and is excellent for fish ponds, where it has a chance to produce Pearls.

The base catch rates are roughly distributed as follows:

  • Seaweed: 41%
  • Midnight Squid: 21%
  • Spook Fish: 16%
  • Blobfish: 10%
  • Sea Cucumber: 5%
  • Super Cucumber: 4%
  • Octopus: 2.2%
  • Pearl: 0.4%

Using a Curiosity Lure significantly shifts these odds in favor of the rare fish. With the lure equipped, the Blobfish rate doubles to 20%, and the chance of hooking a Pearl increases to 0.9%. If the goal is profit or completing the collection, the submarine ride should be a priority on at least one of the three nights. Note that the submarine closes its doors at 11 PM, so arriving early is necessary.

Strategic seed purchasing at the Magic Shop Boat

The Magic Shop Boat, located to the right of the famous painter, is a critical resource for long-term farm planning. It sells various decorative items and seeds, but the inventory of seeds rotates every night based on the season they belong to.

Night 1 (Winter 15): Spring seeds

This is the chance to stock up on Parsnip, Bean, Cauliflower, Potato, Tulip, Kale, and Blue Jazz seeds. For players entering their second year, Garlic seeds are also available here. Purchasing these now allows for an immediate start on Spring 1 without waiting for Pierre's to open or dealing with opening day crowds.

Night 2 (Winter 16): Summer seeds

Inventory shifts to Melon, Tomato, Blueberry, Hot Pepper, Wheat, Poppy, Spangle, Hops, Corn, and Sunflower seeds. Again, Year 2 players can buy Red Cabbage seeds here—a vital item for those aiming to finish the Community Center early if they missed it during the first year.

Night 3 (Winter 17): Fall seeds

The final night offers Corn, Eggplant, Pumpkin, Bok Choy, Yam, Cranberry, Fairy Rose, and Grape seeds. Artichoke seeds are available for those in Year 2 or beyond.

In addition to seeds, the Magic Shop Boat sells a unique Iridium Fireplace for 15,000g each night, providing a high-end aesthetic light source for the farmhouse. The Cone Hat is also sold here, but its price fluctuates wildly: 5,000g on the first night, dropping to 2,500g on the second, and spiking to 10,000g on the third. Waiting until the second night is the logical choice for collectors.

The Mermaid Boat and the Pearl puzzle

On the far right of the docks lies the Mermaid Boat. Entering the boat triggers a musical performance by a mermaid. While the show itself is a spectacle, the real value lies in the interaction after the performance ends.

Inside the boat, there are five clam shells that produce musical notes when clicked. To receive a special prize, the shells must be played in a specific sequence. This sequence is hinted at in Secret Note #15, but reading the note is not a requirement to claim the reward.

The sequence is: 1 - 4 - 5 - 3 - 2 (from left to right).

Upon successful entry of the melody, the mermaid will grant the player a Pearl. This item is highly valuable, selling for 2,500g, and is a universally loved gift (except by Sebastian). It can also be used in tailoring to create the Bridal Veil. It is important to note that only one Pearl can be obtained from the Mermaid Boat per save file. Subsequent visits in following years will provide the show but no additional Pearl.

Famous Painter Lupini’s art collection

Lupini stands between the docks selling a different painting each night for 1,200g. For completionists, this is a three-year commitment. There are nine paintings in total, and they rotate on a fixed schedule.

  • Year 1, 4, 7...
    • Winter 15: 'Red Eagle'
    • Winter 16: 'Portrait of a Mermaid'
    • Winter 17: 'Solar Kingdom'
  • Year 2, 5, 8...
    • Winter 15: 'Clouds'
    • Winter 16: '1000 Years From Now'
    • Winter 17: 'Three Trees'
  • Year 3, 6, 9...
    • Winter 15: 'The Serpent'
    • Winter 16: 'Tropical Fish #173'
    • Winter 17: 'Land of Clay'

Missing a painting means waiting another three in-game years for it to cycle back into stock, making Lupini's booth a mandatory stop for decorators.

The Decoration Boat and seasonal flair

The blue boat situated between the docks specializes in aesthetic items. This shop is the only place to purchase Candy Cane Decorations (both red and green). Other items like the Seasonal Decor and Seasonal Plants are available here as well, though some can be found at other festivals. These items are unlimited in stock, allowing for massive farm redesigns during the quiet winter months.

Everyday amenities: Free coffee and the Traveling Cart

Even if you are low on gold, the Night Market offers value. The Desert Trader, parked just outside the submarine, gives out one free cup of Coffee every night. This provides a minor speed boost, which is helpful for navigating the docks or running back to the farm.

Additionally, the Traveling Cart makes an appearance on all three nights. Unlike its usual spot in Cindersap Forest, it is conveniently located right on the beach. Its stock remains randomized, providing extra chances to find rare items needed for the Bulletin Board bundles or rare seeds like the Sweet Gem Berry.

Optimal Night Market itinerary

To make the most of the event without feeling overwhelmed by the passing time, a structured approach is often helpful.

Impact of the 1.6 Update on the Night Market

With recent updates to the game, the Night Market remains a cornerstone of the winter season, but new items like the Curiosity Lure and the Sonar Bobber have made the fishing aspect much more interactive. The Sonar Bobber, in particular, allows players to see what is on the hook before reeling it in, which is incredibly useful in the submarine where you want to prioritize Blobfish over Seaweed.

Furthermore, the introduction of new furniture items and the ability to place decorations in more areas means the stock at the Decoration Boat has higher utility than in previous versions of the game. For players who have reached the "perfection" stage of the game, the Night Market serves as a primary source for the massive amounts of seeds required to fill the Ginger Island farm or the Greenhouse without waiting for the appropriate season in Pelican Town.

Final considerations for Winter 15-17

While the Night Market is exciting, remember that the rest of the valley remains active. If you have an ongoing quest with a deadline, the shops in town like Pierre’s and Clint’s stay open during their normal hours. You can complete your daily farm tasks, visit the mines, or socialise with villagers (many of whom visit the market on specific nights) before heading to the beach at 5 PM.

By treating the Night Market as a strategic window for resource gathering rather than just a festive distraction, you can set your farm up for a significantly more productive Spring. Whether it is the rare deep-sea fish, the elusive Pearl, or simply a head start on your seed inventory, those three nights in Winter are among the most valuable hours you will spend in the game.
