These connection failures rarely stem from a broken controller; instead, they are almost always the result of handshake protocols, driver overlaps, or physical hardware limitations that are easily overlooked.
The Cable Trap: Power vs. Data
One of the most frequent reasons a PS4 controller fails to connect via USB is the cable itself. In an era where most devices use USB-C, the older Micro-USB cables required for the DualShock 4 are often relegated to "charging only" status. Many Micro-USB cables bundled with secondary electronics—like wireless headphones or rechargeable lamps—only contain two wires for power delivery and lack the internal data lines required for a PC to recognize a HID (Human Interface Device).

If Steam is running in the background while a user attempts to use a third-party mapper like DS4Windows, the two programs may engage in a "tug-of-war" over the controller’s inputs. This conflict can cause the controller to appear connected for a split second before being kicked off by the system to prevent double-input errors.

In the Device Manager, users can navigate to "Human Interface Devices," find the "HID-compliant game controller," and under the Power Management tab, uncheck the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
Repeating this for the Generic Bluetooth Radio and the USB Root Hub entries ensures that the system maintains a constant stream of power to the controller's connection path. While this might slightly decrease battery life on portable machines, it eliminates the random disconnections that plague many PS4 controller users on PC.
By systematically addressing the physical cable, the pairing methodology, and the software overlay conflicts, almost any PS4 controller can be successfully integrated into a PC gaming setup. The key is to recognize that the DualShock 4 was never natively designed for Windows, and it occasionally needs a little manual intervention to keep the communication lines open.
