Facing the Regal Ancestor Spirit in Nokron, Eternal City, is one of the most visually arresting experiences in the Lands Between. Unlike the frantic, blood-soaked battles against demigods, this fight feels like a somber dance within an ethereal graveyard. However, do not let its majestic appearance fool you. This legend boss possesses one of the most frustrating mechanics in the game: the ability to siphon life from the surrounding animal spirits, potentially resetting your progress multiple times during the encounter.

Defeating this beast requires more than just high damage; it requires an understanding of the cycle of life and death that the Ancestral Spirits represent. Located in the northern Hallowhorn Grounds, the Regal Ancestor Spirit is an optional challenge, but the rewards—and the sheer atmosphere of the arena—make it a mandatory stop for any serious explorer.

Finding the Hallowhorn Grounds and Lighting the Fires

You cannot simply walk into the arena of the Regal Ancestor Spirit. Much like its lesser counterpart in Siofra River, this boss is locked behind a ritual. You must navigate the Ancestral Woods in Nokron and light six obelisks (pillars with braziers at their base) scattered throughout the forest.

The Ancestral Woods is a dense, vertical area filled with Ancestral Followers and giant rats. To unlock the boss, keep an eye out for these specific locations:

  1. The Cliff Edge: Near the broken bridge leading from the Mimic Tear site of grace. It is usually guarded by a few followers.
  2. The Brick Road East: Located directly east of the Ancestral Woods site of grace, right by the side of the main path.
  3. The Singing Shaman Ledge: On a high ledge where an Ancestral Shaman can be heard singing. This one offers a great view of the lower ruins.
  4. The Central Field: Look for a tall, narrow rock in an open field northwest of the grace point. It is isolated and easy to spot once you clear the nearby enemies.
  5. The Far Northwest Corner: Tucked away near some submerged ruins and guarded by a larger group of chanting shamans and giant rats. This is the most dangerous one to light due to the density of enemies.
  6. The Western Ruin: Located just west of the Hallowhorn Grounds building, hidden behind a large carcass.

Once the sixth flame is lit, a notification will appear stating that "Power gathers in the ancestral remains." Return to the temple in the north, touch the glowing deer carcass at the back, and you will be transported to the secret arena.

Understanding the Stats: Weaknesses and Resistances

Before engaging the spirit, it is vital to optimize your loadout. The Regal Ancestor Spirit is a massive, spectral entity, and its resistances reflect its ethereal nature.

Damage Negations

  • Fire: -20% (Weakness). Fire damage is highly effective here. Whether you are using Fire Grease, pyromancy, or weapons like the Blasphemous Blade, this is your primary tool for a quick kill.
  • Holy: -20% (Weakness). As a creature existing outside the Erdtree's grace, it remains vulnerable to Holy damage. Faith builds will find great success with Sacred Blade or Order-based incantations.
  • Slash: -10% (Slight Weakness). If you are a physical attacker, curved swords and katanas perform slightly better than blunt weapons.
  • Magic: 20% (Resistance). While not immune, it takes significantly less damage from standard sorceries.
  • Standard/Pierce/Strike: 0%. These do neutral damage.

Status Effect Resistances

This is where the fight gets tricky. The Regal Ancestor Spirit is highly resistant to almost every status effect in the game. It has a high threshold for Poison, Scarlet Rot, Hemorrhage (Bleed), and Frostbite. While you can trigger these effects, it will take much longer than it would against a human boss. It is completely immune to Sleep and Madness, so don't bother with St. Trina's equipment or Frenzy spells.

The Mechanics of the Soul Siphon

The defining feature of this fight is the Soul Siphon. When the spirit's health drops below 50%, it will begin to glow with a bright blue light and begin siphoning the essence of the spectral animals grazing in the arena.

This move does three things:

  1. Heals the Boss: It can restore up to 50% of its total health during the first cast, and subsequent casts restore smaller amounts (30%, then 15%).
  2. AOE Damage: It creates a damaging pulse around the boss. If you are standing too close, you will be knocked back.
  3. Phase Transition: This marks the start of Phase 2 and Phase 3, where the boss begins to utilize animal-themed attacks.

A common mistake is to back away when the boss starts healing. Instead, you should stay aggressive. If you have enough stamina or a high-damage spell like Night Maiden's Mist or Comet Azur, you can potentially out-damage the heal or at least minimize the net gain.

Attack Patterns and Animal Mimicry

The Regal Ancestor Spirit is more than just a deer; it is a manifestation of many forest spirits. Its move set changes based on which spectral animal it "emerges" from after a teleport.

The Standard Deer Moves

  • Antler Sweeps: A two-to-three-hit combo where it swings its head horizontally. Roll into the swings to get underneath its belly.
  • Air Prance/Triple Jump: The boss leaps into the air and performs two mid-air jumps before slamming down. Timing Tip: Wait a half-second after the second mid-air jump before rolling. It floats slightly longer than you expect.
  • Ethereal Flame Breath: It sprays a blue flame on the ground. This flame lingers and deals continuous damage. The air version is particularly dangerous as it covers a wide arc. Simply run perpendicular to the boss to avoid it.

The Animal Transformations (Phase 2 & 3)

After the boss teleports (collapsing into a pile of bones and reappearing elsewhere), it will sometimes mimic a specific animal spirit:

  • The Boar Charge: The boss lowers its antlers and squeals like a boar before charging at high speed. You must dodge at the last possible second. Dodging toward the boss at an angle is usually safer than dodging backward.
  • The Goat Roll: Perhaps the most infamous move. The spirit curls into a ball and rolls toward you repeatedly. This can last for a long time. The best counter is to run in a tight circle or use a shield with high stability. Do not try to outrun it in a straight line.
  • The Springhare Hop: The spirit releases a high-pitched squeal and hops toward you up to three times, creating shockwaves upon landing. Jumping over the shockwaves is often more effective than rolling, as it keeps your stamina higher for a counter-attack.

Strategy: Melee vs. Ranged

Melee Strategy

For melee players, the safest place to be is directly under the spirit's belly or near its hind legs. This allows you to avoid the majority of antler sweeps. However, be wary of its Hoof Stomp and Back Kick. If you see it rear up on its hind legs, roll away to avoid the stomp. If you stay directly behind it for too long, it will donkey-kick you with surprising force.

Use weapons that deal Slash or Fire damage. High-posture damage is also a valid strategy. Breaking its stance (which requires about 120 stance damage) allows for a critical hit on its eye, dealing massive damage and potentially skipping one of its healing phases.

Ranged and Magic Strategy

If you are a Sorcerer or an Incantation user, use the size of the arena to your advantage. While the boss is resistant to magic, heavy-hitting spells like Rock Sling are great for breaking its poise.

When the boss begins its healing animation, this is your window to shine. Cast Night Maiden's Mist directly on it; since the boss stays stationary while siphoning, it will take the full tick damage of the mist. If you are a Faith build, Burn, O Flame! or Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike can delete a massive portion of its health bar while it is stuck in the animation.

The Spirit Ash Dilemma

Normally, summoning Spirit Ashes makes a boss fight significantly easier. In this case, it is a double-edged sword. The Regal Ancestor Spirit's Soul Siphon can actually drain health from your summoned spirits as well. If you summon a high-HP tank like Mimic Tear or Lhutel the Headless, the boss might use them as a "battery" to heal itself even more effectively.

If you choose to use summons, choose high-damage, low-HP spirits like Black Knife Tiche or several Greatshield Soldiers to distract it, but be prepared for the fight to last longer if the boss successfully siphons them.

Rewards: Remembrance of the Regal Ancestor

Upon victory, you receive 24,000 Runes (in NG) and the Remembrance of the Regal Ancestor. This remembrance can be traded with Enia at Roundtable Hold for one of two unique items, both of which are excellent for specific builds:

  1. Winged Greathorn (Greathaxe): This weapon scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity. Its unique skill, Soul Stifler, creates a cloud that reduces the defense of enemies caught within it. It is a fantastic support tool for boss fights or for setting up massive burst damage.
  2. Ancestral Spirit's Horn (Talisman): This is one of the best utility talismans for dungeon crawling. It restores 3 FP for every enemy killed. If you are a mage or a weapon-skill-heavy build, this allows you to explore entire legacy dungeons without ever touching a Cerulean Flask.

In the current landscape of 2026, the Ancestral Spirit's Horn remains a staple in "efficiency builds" for clearing out mobs, while the Winged Greathorn has seen a resurgence in niche PvP setups due to its ability to debuff tanky opponents.

Glitches and Trivia

There is a long-standing glitch where the Regal Ancestor Spirit may occasionally teleport "out of bounds" or fall through the floor of the arena map. If this happens, the boss will fall for several seconds before the game registers its death, granting you the victory and rewards automatically. While it robs you of the satisfaction of the kill, it’s a known quirk of the encounter's unique physics.

Anatomically, the spirit is also quite interesting. Despite being called a "deer," it possesses a single toe on each foot and a jaw structure more closely resembling a horse. This highlights its nature as a "phenomenon beyond the purview of the Erdtree"—a prehistoric or primordial life form that doesn't follow the standard biological rules of the Lands Between.

Final Tips for Success

  • Don't Panic Roll: Many of the spirit's attacks have delayed follow-throughs. Observe the antlers, not the body.
  • Equip a Physical Shield: A shield with 100% physical damage negation (like the Brass Shield) can save you from the antler sweeps if your timing is off.
  • Focus on the Head: If you can land hits on its head, you deal increased damage. Ranged players should always lock onto the head rather than the body.
  • Keep it aggressive: The longer the fight lasts, the more chances the boss has to heal. Force it into its teleport cycles by staying close and dealing consistent damage.

Winning this fight is a test of patience and burst damage. By respecting its animal-mimicry and punishing its healing windows with fire or holy damage, you will put this ancient spirit to rest and claim the power of the ancestors for yourself.
