The Iron Throne represents one of the most high-stakes sequences in Baldur's Gate 3, functioning more as a complex turn-based puzzle than a standard combat encounter. Located deep beneath the waters of the Gray Harbour in the Lower City, this crumbling prison houses critical NPCs whose survival dictates the outcome of major Act 3 questlines, including the fate of the Gondians, the Blade of Frontiers, and the Society of Brilliance. Success requires a mastery of action economy, movement optimization, and a precise understanding of AI behavior under pressure.

The Mechanics of a Sinking Prison

Upon docking at the Iron Throne via Redhammer's submersible, a countdown initiates. This timer is the primary antagonist, and its duration varies based on the chosen difficulty setting. On Explorer, players are granted 8 turns; Balanced offers 6; while Tactician and Honour Mode restrict the window to a punishing 5 turns.

Exceeding this limit results in the immediate death of any character remaining inside the facility as it implodes. While party members can be resurrected by Withers after a failed escape, the prisoners—Duke Ravengard, Omeluum, and the Gondians—are permanently lost. Understanding that the environment is your greatest enemy is the first step toward a perfect rescue.

Essential Preparations for the Heist

Entering the Iron Throne without adequate preparation often leads to disaster. The goal is to maximize the distance covered per turn while maintaining the ability to interact with levers.

  • Movement Enhancement: Every party member should have access to Haste, either via the spell or Potions of Speed. However, be cautious with potions; if the three-turn duration expires before you finish the rescue, the resulting Lethargic condition can be a death sentence. To counter this, quaff a second potion on the turn the first is set to expire.
  • Teleportation: Spells like Misty Step and Dimension Door are mandatory. Arrow of Transposition provides a non-spell slot alternative for martial characters.
  • Action Economy: Spells that allow for multiple interactions, such as Magic Missile, are invaluable. A single casting of Magic Missile can activate three different door levers from a distance, provided there is line of sight.
  • Summoning: Elementals, Ghouls (from Danse Macabre), and Spiritual Weapons should be deployed immediately upon descending. While they often cannot interact with levers, they serve as essential decoys for the Sahuagin that spawn continuously in the southern corridors.

Geographic Objectives: The Four Halls

The Iron Throne is laid out in a cardinal cross-shape. Efficiency dictates splitting the party to cover all wings simultaneously.

The Eastern Wing: Duke Ravengard

Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard is held in the central cell of the eastern block. Saving him is intrinsically tied to Wyll’s pact with Mizora. If Wyll has broken his pact, Mizora will intervene the moment the Duke steps out of his cell. She will command him to kneel—robbing him of his turn—and summon Combustion Belly Spiderlings to assassinate him.

To counter this, a dedicated healer or protector must accompany the Duke. Casting Sanctuary on him before he exits the cell prevents the spiders from targeting him. Alternatively, a character can use Dimension Door to teleport the Duke toward the central ladder immediately, bypassing the ambush entirely. If the Duke has been healed to full health prior to exiting, he can usually survive the initial explosion, but Sanctuary remains the safest methodology.

The Southern Wing: Omeluum and the Flooded Corridor

The Mind Flayer Omeluum is located at the far end of the southern corridor, past a flooded area. It is strapped to a chair and requires a Help action to be freed. Reaching Omeluum is a priority because of its unique ability: Teleport to Submersible.

Once freed, Omeluum can instantly teleport itself and one other ally back to the safety of the submersible. This makes the southern wing the ideal route for a single, high-mobility character. After rescuing Omeluum, that character is effectively "safe" and can use their remaining turns to assist others from the docking area or loot the nearby Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen.

The Northern and Western Wings: The Gondians

The Gondians are scattered throughout the facility, with a high concentration in the northern and western cells. These NPCs possess the "Glimpse of Freedom" condition, allowing them to Dash as a bonus action. However, their AI can be erratic. They prioritize moving toward the ladder but can be easily blocked by Sahuagin.

Clearing the central hub is vital for their survival. If the Sahuagin ensnare a Gondian with a net, that NPC will likely fail to reach the ladder in time. Having a character stationed in the center to pick off Sahuagin or cast area-of-effect control spells (like Slow or Confusion) ensures a clear path for the fleeing scientists.

Tactical Execution: Turn-by-Turn Optimization

Turns 1 and 2: The Sprint

In the opening turns, focus entirely on reaching the furthest levers. Do not waste actions on Sahuagin unless they are actively blocking a path. Use Haste and Dash to reach the East and South wings. The character heading North should use Magic Missile or ranged attacks to trigger levers before even entering the room. This allows the prisoners to start their movement toward the ladder as early as possible.

Turns 3 and 4: The Escort

By the midpoint, the first wave of prisoners should be reaching the central ladder. This is the most dangerous phase, as Sahuagin reinforcements spawn from the water pools. Use summons to occupy the Sahuagin in the South. If a door needs to be closed to prevent enemies from flooding the center, use the levers located on the interior of the halls, but ensure no prisoners are trapped behind them.

Turn 5 (or Final Turn): The Extraction

On the final turn, any character not on the submersible's upper deck or the immediate docking ladder is considered lost. It is often necessary to use Dimension Door one last time to pull a lagging Gondian or a slow-moving party member to the base of the ladder. If using Omeluum, ensure its teleport is saved for the party member furthest from the exit.

Advanced Strategies for Honour Mode

In Honour Mode, the 5-turn limit leaves zero room for error. The most effective strategy involves the "Arcane Gate" spell or high-level "Fly." Arcane Gate can link the central hub directly to the deeper halls, allowing Gondians to bypass entire corridors of Sahuagin.

Furthermore, the use of "Telekinesis" can be a desperation move to throw a prisoner toward the ladder, though it risks damaging them. If the situation looks dire, prioritize the Duke and Omeluum. While saving every Gondian is the ideal outcome for the "Save the Gondians" quest, rescuing even a handful is sufficient to trigger the uprising at the Steel Watch Foundry later on.

The Aftermath of the Escape

Returning to the surface with the survivors triggers several immediate consequences. If Redhammer is still alive, the Wave Servants of the Water Queen’s House will confront the party at the dock, seeking vengeance for the death of their kin. How the party handles this encounter—whether through gold, intimidation, or combat—will determine their standing with the Umberlee-worshipping faction.

More importantly, Duke Ravengard will relocate to the party’s camp. If he was rescued, he provides critical lore regarding the Wyrmway and the ancient protector of Baldur’s Gate, opening the path to the Ansur boss fight. The Gondians, grateful for their liberation, will provide the motivation needed to finally disable the Steel Watch, removing Gortash’s primary source of power and setting the stage for the final confrontation in the city.

Mastering the Iron Throne in BG3 is less about brute force and more about the surgical application of movement and crowd control. By treating the encounter as a race against the environment, players can ensure that not a single life is claimed by the depths of the Gray Harbour.
