Skyrim Shout Locations: Every Word Wall and Quest Lock Explained
Finding every power in the northern province of Tamriel is a massive undertaking. The Thu'um, or the Way of the Voice, is the backbone of any Dragonborn build, but the locations of shouts in Skyrim are often tucked away behind ancient puzzles, high-level bosses, or lengthy questlines. Whether you are aiming to complete your collection or just need that one specific utility shout to balance your combat style, knowing exactly where to look saves hours of aimless wandering through the tundra.
The Mechanics of Finding Words of Power
Before heading to the nearest Nordic ruin, it is important to understand how the discovery system works. Each dragon shout consists of three Words of Power. While the locations of the Word Walls are fixed, the words themselves are learned in a specific sequence. For example, if you visit any of the three walls for the "Animal Allegiance" shout, you will always learn the first word "Raan" (Animal) first, regardless of which ruin you step into.
Unlocking these words requires a Dragon Soul, obtained by defeating dragons. Some shouts are gifted directly by NPCs like the Greybeards or Paarthurnax, bypassing the need for souls. If you find yourself stuck, remember that after completing "The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller," you can ask Arngeir at High Hrothgar for the locations of remaining words. Alternatively, using a shout in a populated city often triggers a "Letter from a Friend," delivered by a courier, pointing you toward a distant source of power.
Base Game Shout Locations
Animal Allegiance (Raan - Mir - Tah)
This shout is particularly useful for lower-level players who find themselves overwhelmed by mammoths or bears in the wild. It charms nearby animals to fight alongside you.
- Angarvunde: Located in The Rift. This site is quest-locked; you must assist Medresi Dran in the "Medresi Dran and the Wandering Dead" quest to access the inner chambers.
- Ancient’s Ascent: A dragon lair in the mountains southwest of Helgen. The easiest path is through Bonechill Passage.
- Ysgramor’s Tomb: Situated in Winterhold. This location is tied to the Companions questline. While some players manage to climb the exterior rocks, it is traditionally accessed during the quest "Glory of the Dead."
Aura Whisper (Laas - Yah - Nir)
For stealth-focused characters, this is an essential tool. It reveals the life force of all nearby entities, including the undead and machines, without alerting them.
- Northwind Summit: A dragon lair on the border of Eastmarch and The Rift. You can reach the peak by traversing Northwind Mine.
- Valthume: Located in The Reach. This is a quest-locked dungeon. You must start "Evil in Waiting" by speaking to the spirit Valdar at the entrance to open the path.
- Volunruud: Found in The Pale. It is accessible during the Dark Brotherhood quest "The Silence Has Been Broken" or the standalone quest "Silenced Tongues."
Become Ethereal (Feim - Zii - Gron)
This shout is perhaps the best defensive tool in the game. It allows you to jump from any height without taking damage or regenerate stamina/magicka without being hit.
- Ironbind Barrow: North of the Nightgate Inn. You will likely encounter two adventurers, Salma and Beem-Ja, at the entrance.
- Lost Valley Redoubt: A massive Forsworn camp in The Reach. The Word Wall is located at the top of the waterfall near Bard's Leap Summit.
- Ustengrav: Located in Hjaalmarch. This is a mandatory stop during the Main Quest "The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller."
Disarm (Zun - Haal - Viik)
Useful for taking the edge off high-level humanoid enemies, this shout forces opponents to drop their weapons.
- Eldersblood Peak: A dragon lair atop the mountains in Hjaalmarch.
- Silverdrift Lair: A Nordic ruin in The Pale filled with Draugr.
- Snow Veil Sanctum: Located in Winterhold. Access is restricted until you reach the Thieves Guild quest "Speaking with Silence."
Elemental Fury (Su - Grah - Dun)
This shout significantly increases your weapon attack speed. Note that it does not work on enchanted weapons, making it a favorite for dual-wielding warriors using standard steel or daedric blades.
- Dragontooth Crater: A dragon lair in the northwest mountains of The Reach.
- Kilkreath Ruins: Located in Haafingar. This is tied to the Daedric quest "The Break of Dawn" (Meridia’s Beacon).
- Shriekwind Bastion: A vampire-infested ruin in Falkreath Hold.
Fire Breath (Yol - Toor - Shul)
The iconic offensive shout. While its raw damage is lower than high-end destruction spells, its utility in staggering groups of enemies is valuable.
- Dustman’s Cairn: Part of the Companions quest "Proving Honor."
- Sunderstone Gorge: A cave in Falkreath Hold filled with mages and necromancers.
- Throat of the World: This word is gifted to you by Paarthurnax during the Main Quest.
Frost Breath (Fo - Krah - Diin)
Similar to Fire Breath but slows enemies down. It is particularly effective against warriors who rely on movement speed.
- Bonestrewn Crest: A dragon lair in the middle of the Eastmarch geyser fields.
- Folgunthur: Located in Hjaalmarch. It is part of the "Forbidden Legend" side quest.
- Skyborn Altar: A dragon lair in the mountains of Hjaalmarch, near Labyrinthian.
Ice Form (Iiz - Slen - Nus)
One of the most powerful crowd control shouts. It completely paralyzes enemies in a block of ice for a duration.
- Frostmere Crypt: Found in The Pale. It is the site of the quest "The Pale Lady."
- Mount Anthor: A dragon lair in the mountains of Winterhold.
- Saarthal: Located near Winterhold. It is quest-locked behind the College of Winterhold quest "Under Saarthal."
Kyne’s Peace (Kaan - Drem - Ov)
This shout calms aggressive wild animals. It is a peaceful alternative to Animal Allegiance.
- Ragnvald: A temple in The Reach. You must defeat the priest Otar the Mad to safely explore.
- Rannveig’s Fast: A ruin in Whiterun Hold with a trap-heavy entrance.
- Shroud Hearth Barrow: Located in Ivarstead. You must complete the initial investigation quest involving the "ghost" Wyndelius Gatharian.
Marked for Death (Krii - Lun - Aus)
Arguably the most "broken" shout in the game due to its armor-reducing effect that stacks over time, making even the toughest bosses vulnerable.
- Autumnwatch Tower: A dragon lair south of Ivarstead.
- Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary: Located near Falkreath. You must join the Dark Brotherhood to enter.
- Forsaken Cave: Located in The Pale. It is part of the quest "The White Phial."
Storm Call (Strun - Bah - Qo)
This shout summons a massive lightning storm that strikes both friends and foes. It is best used when fighting outdoors alone.
- Forelhost: A high-level ruin in The Rift. You must climb the mountain southeast of Riften.
- High Gate Ruins: Located in The Pale. You will fight the Dragon Priest Vokun here.
- Skuldafn: This location is only accessible during the final stages of the Main Quest and cannot be revisited.
Throw Voice (Zul - Mey - Gut)
A unique shout where all three words are learned at once. It distracts enemies by throwing your voice to a distant point.
- Shearpoint: A dragon lair in The Pale. Be prepared to fight both a dragon and the Dragon Priest Krosis simultaneously.
Unrelenting Force (Fus - Ro - Dah)
The most famous shout, used for staggering or launching enemies off cliffs.
- Bleak Falls Barrow: The first word is found here during "Bleak Falls Barrow" or "Before the Storm."
- High Hrothgar: The remaining two words are gifted by the Greybeards during "The Way of the Voice."
Whirlwind Sprint (Wuld - Nah - Kest)
Essential for traversing gaps or escaping sticky situations.
- Dead Men's Respite: Located in Hjaalmarch. Part of the Bards College quest "Tending the Flames."
- High Hrothgar: One word is gifted by the Greybeards.
- Volskygge: A ruin in Haafingar. The wall is on the exterior peak.
Dawnguard DLC Shouts
The Dawnguard expansion adds three unique shouts that focus on life-drain and necromancy.
- Drain Vitality (Gaan - Lah - Haas): Found in Dimhollow Crypt, Forgotten Vale, and Arcwind Point. It drains both stamina and magicka.
- Soul Tear (Rii - Vaaz - Zol): This shout is learned from Durnehviir in the Soul Cairn. You must summon him in Tamriel three times to learn all three words. It traps souls and resurrects the dead.
- Summon Durnehviir (Dur - Neh - Viir): Obtained automatically after defeating Durnehviir in the Soul Cairn.
Dragonborn DLC Shouts
Set on the island of Solstheim, these shouts are tied to the influence of Hermaeus Mora and the first Dragonborn, Miraak.
- Bend Will (Gol - Hah - Dov): The first word is at Saering's Watch. The second and third are learned from Hermaeus Mora during the Main Questline of the DLC. This is used to tame dragons.
- Battle Fury (Mid - Vur - Shaan): Found in Vahlok's Tomb during the quest "Lost Legacy." It increases the attack speed of your allies.
- Cyclone (Ven - Gaar - Nos): Found in Benkongerike, Kolbjorn Barrow (requires the quest "Unearthed"), and White Ridge Barrow. It creates a small tornado that launches enemies.
- Dragon Aspect (Mul - Qah - Diiv): Found in Raven Rock Mine, Temple of Miraak, and Apocrypha. It gives you a physical armor of dragon scales once per day.
Strategy for Efficient Hunting
If you want to maximize your efficiency in collecting these locations, prioritize the Main Quest until you have "Dragonrend" (unlocked during "Alduin's Bane"). Dragonrend is the only shout that forces dragons to land, making the combat at dragon lairs much faster.
Additionally, pay attention to the "Quest Locks." There is nothing more frustrating than trekking to a remote ruin like Saarthal or Snow Veil Sanctum only to find the door requires a key or a specific quest stage to open. Joining the major factions—the College of Winterhold, the Companions, the Thieves Guild, and the Dark Brotherhood—early in your playthrough is the most reliable way to ensure you have access to almost every Word Wall in the game.
For those playing on higher difficulties, the order in which you visit these locations matters. "Become Ethereal" should be a priority for its survival utility. "Marked for Death" is a priority for melee builds facing armored bosses. "Aura Whisper" is a game-changer for mages and thieves who need to know what is behind the next door before they run out of magicka or cover.
Lastly, remember that some locations like Skuldafn are one-time opportunities. If you miss the Word Wall there during the final quest, you cannot return without using console commands. Keep your eyes sharp for the glowing blue etchings on the curved stone walls, and listen for the distinct chanting that grows louder as you approach a Word of Power.
