Where to Find Every Map Fragment in Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree
Unlocking the full map in Elden Ring is the first major milestone for any Tarnished. When you first step into the Lands Between, the world map is a vast, grey expanse covered in fog. While you can see the faint outlines of main roads, the intricate details of the terrain, enemy encampments, and hidden structures remain hidden until you collect Map Fragments.
Each Map Fragment is located at a stone monument known as a stele. Finding these steles is surprisingly intuitive once you know the secret: even on the greyed-out map, there is a tiny, glowing orange pillar icon that marks the exact location of the Map Fragment for that region.
The Essential Strategy for Map Exploration
Before diving into specific locations, it is crucial to understand how to prioritize map collection. In Elden Ring, the map is not just a visual aid; it is a tactical tool.
When entering a new region, your primary goal should be to sprint toward that orange icon. You can place a personal beacon on the icon by opening your map and pressing the designate button. This creates a pillar of blue light in the 3D world, allowing you to navigate toward the fragment without constantly reopening your menu. Most steles are located along main roads, though some require navigating treacherous cliffs or underground labyrinths.
Map Fragments of Limgrave and the Weeping Peninsula
Limgrave is where your journey begins, and it serves as the perfect tutorial for the map system. This region is divided into three distinct fragments.
Limgrave, West
The very first Map Fragment most players find is in West Limgrave. It is located at the Gatefront Ruins, just north of the Church of Elleh. The stele stands in the middle of a sunken path surrounded by Godrick’s soldiers.
- Pro Tip: You don't need to clear the entire camp. Ride in on Torrent, grab the fragment from the base of the pillar, and ride out before the Knight with the brass shield can pin you down.
Limgrave, East
To the east lies the Mistwood, a dense forest home to terrifyingly large Rune Bears. The Map Fragment for East Limgrave is located along the main road, north of the Minor Erdtree.
- Observation: In our experience, the Rune Bears in this area are best avoided early on. They are faster than they look and can easily knock you off your horse. Stick to the road to find the monument.
Weeping Peninsula
South of Limgrave lies the Weeping Peninsula, reached by crossing the Bridge of Sacrifice. The Map Fragment is located further south along the road leading toward Castle Morne. You will find the stele right after passing a Site of Grace and a merchant.
- Warning: As you approach this monument, a giant archer from the castle will begin firing massive arrows. Keep moving laterally to avoid getting skewered while you claim the item.
Mapping the Liurnia of the Lakes
Liurnia is a massive, water-logged region that can be confusing to navigate due to the fog and repetitive landscape. There are three fragments here.
Liurnia, East
As you enter Liurnia after defeating Godrick (or taking the shortcut around Stormveil), follow the eastern cliffs. The map is found in the wetlands, specifically at the Liurnia Lake Shore. It is surrounded by several hostile swamp creatures, but the stele itself is quite visible near the merchant’s campfire.
Liurnia, North
The most important fragment in this region is the North Liurnia map. It is situated right next to the Academy Gate Town Site of Grace. This location is central to the lake and provides the layout for the outskirts of Raya Lucaria Academy.
Liurnia, West
The Western fragment is located along the northern road on the western landmass. You will find it just below the Kingsrealm Ruins.
- Tactical Advice: If you are following the path toward Caria Manor to meet Ranni the Witch, you will naturally pass this monument. Be wary of the illusory floor in the ruins nearby.
The Desolation of Caelid and Dragonbarrow
Caelid is a nightmare of scarlet rot and monstrous dogs. Navigating this area without a map is a recipe for disaster.
Caelid
The main Caelid Map Fragment is found in the southern portion of the region. Follow the Caelid Highway South. The monument is located at a fork in the road, not far from the nomadic merchant and the Aeonia Swamp.
Dragonbarrow
The northern half of Caelid, known as Dragonbarrow, has its own fragment. It is located on the road east of the Dragonbarrow West Site of Grace.
- Experience Note: This area is significantly higher level than southern Caelid. Expect to see dragons flying overhead. The map piece is near a fork in the road that leads toward the Bestial Sanctum.
Ascending the Altus Plateau and Mt. Gelmir
The Altus Plateau is a golden landscape that marks the mid-game transition. To get here, you either need the two halves of the Dectus Medallion or you must brave the Ruin-Strewn Precipice.
Altus Plateau
Once you reach the plateau, follow the road north toward the capital. The Map Fragment is located just past the Altus Highway Junction Site of Grace. It is a straightforward find along the main path.
Leyndell, Royal Capital
As you approach the outskirts of the capital, you will find a secondary map piece at the Outer Wall Phantom Tree. This area is distinctive because of the golden sapling that rewards you with two Golden Seeds. The map stele is just a few steps away.
Mt. Gelmir
Mt. Gelmir is perhaps the most difficult overworld map to locate due to the verticality of the terrain. The map is found near the Road of Iniquity Site of Grace.
- Navigation Tip: You cannot simply ride straight to it. You must circle around the mountain, climbing several long ladders on the northern face, and eventually drop down into the ravine where the stele is guarded by a massive spider hand.
The Frozen Peaks: Mountaintops of the Giants
The endgame begins in the snowy heights. This region is divided into the West and East Mountaintops, plus a secret area.
Mountaintops of the Giants, West
Upon taking the Grand Lift of Rold, you will enter the snowy peaks. The map is right at the beginning of the path, just past the Zamor Ruins. It is almost impossible to miss.
Mountaintops of the Giants, East
To reach the eastern side, you must cross a narrow stone bridge guarded by a Golem. Once across, continue toward the Giant’s Gravepost Site of Grace. The map is right next to the grace point.
Consecrated Snowfield
This is a "secret" map. You must obtain both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion and use them at the Grand Lift of Rold (switching the prompt to "Hoist Secret Medallion"). Once you arrive, the area is covered in a thick blizzard. Ride north through the white-out until you find the stele near a frozen river.
Mapping the Underground Civilizations
Elden Ring features several massive underground maps that are independent of the overworld.
Siofra River
Accessed via the well in East Limgrave. The map is found on a corpse at the base of the stairs leading to the Hallowhorn Grounds (the temple with the deer carcass).
Ainsel River
Accessed via the Ainsel River Well in Liurnia. The map is located in a room guarded by a Malformed Star (a hanging creature that shoots purple rocks). It is near the nomadic merchant in the Uhl Palace Ruins.
Deeproot Depths
This area is reached by resting in a coffin after defeating the Valiant Gargoyles or via a hidden path in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. The map is found in the middle of the flooded city ruins, sheltered under a small pavilion.
Mohgwyn Palace
To get here, you either use the Pureblood Knight's Medal (from Varré's quest) or a teleporter in the Consecrated Snowfield. The map is on a corpse shortly after you arrive at the Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance.
Lake of Rot
Located deeper within the Ainsel River system. The map is found immediately upon entering the shore of the scarlet lake, near the Lake of Rot Shoreside Site of Grace.
Shadow of the Erdtree: Realm of Shadow Map Fragments
The DLC introduces a vertical and complex map. Finding fragments here is essential for understanding the layered level design.
Gravesite Plain
This is the starting area of the DLC. The map is found directly northeast of the first Site of Grace. Look for the tapestry-draped structure; the stele is right underneath it.
Scadu Altus
After passing through Belurat or using the shortcut, you will reach Scadu Altus. The map is found along the road north of the Highroad Cross Site of Grace, near where a Furnace Golem often roams.
Southern Shore (Cerulean Coast)
This beautiful blue-flowered region is reached by traveling through a cave system south of the Gravesite Plain. The map fragment is located on the main path of the Cerulean Coast, clearly visible on a stele.
Rauh Ruins
The Rauh Ruins are split into a lower and upper level. To find the map, you need to navigate the base level, often reached by heading north from the Scadu Altus ravine. The stele is located in a temple-like area filled with shadow enemies.
Abyssal Woods
This is the most hidden map in the DLC. You must enter the Shadow Keep, find the hidden ladder behind an illusory wall in the courtyard, ride a coffin to the Castle Watering Hole, and then navigate through the Darklight Catacombs. After defeating the boss of the catacombs, you enter the Abyssal Woods. The map is located at the Abandoned Church further into the woods.
Summary of Map Exploration
Unlocking the map in Elden Ring is more than just a completionist task; it is a fundamental part of the gameplay loop. By following the orange icons on the foggy map and braving the dangers of each region, you gain the clarity needed to find hidden dungeons, bosses, and valuable upgrade materials. Whether you are navigating the rot-infested wilds of Caelid or the vertical labyrinths of the Realm of Shadow, your first priority in any new area should always be the Map Fragment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I see the orange icon on my map?
The icon only appears once you have physically entered the region. If the map is completely blank (dark brown), you need to travel further into the fog until the "grey" version of the map appears, revealing the roads and the orange pillar icon.
Do I need the map fragments to beat the game?
Technically, no. You can complete Elden Ring without ever picking up a map. However, it makes navigation, finding Sites of Grace, and understanding quest lines significantly harder. It is highly recommended for all players.
Are there maps for legacy dungeons like Stormveil or Volcano Manor?
No. Legacy dungeons and smaller catacombs do not have their own map fragments. Instead, when you enter these areas, the world map switches to a detailed interior view automatically, provided you have the overworld fragment for that area.
Is the DLC map connected to the main map?
No, the Realm of Shadow is a separate map entirely. You can toggle between the Lands Between and the Realm of Shadow by pressing a specific button (R1/L1 or RB/LB) while the map is open.
What is the hardest map fragment to find?
In the base game, the Consecrated Snowfield is the hardest due to the blizzard and the requirement of the Secret Medallion. In the DLC, the Abyssal Woods map is the most difficult because it requires traversing an entire dungeon (Darklight Catacombs) just to reach the area.
