Finding All 16 Mask Shards in Hollow Knight to Max Out Your Health
Survival in the labyrinthine depths of Hallownest depends heavily on the Knight’s shell integrity. In the world of Hollow Knight, health is measured in masks. While starting with five masks provides a basic buffer, late-game challenges and ascended boss encounters necessitate a much larger health pool. Increasing this capacity requires the collection of Mask Shards. For every four shards collected, an additional permanent mask is added to the health bar, allowing for more mistakes and deeper exploration into dangerous territories.
There are exactly 16 Mask Shards hidden throughout the kingdom. Finding all of them brings the total health to nine masks (excluding temporary buffs from Charms like Joni’s Blessing or Lifeblood). Achieving this maximum state is a milestone for completionists and a practical necessity for anyone attempting the Pantheon of Hallownest. The following is a detailed breakdown of where to find every single piece of these ancient masks.
Purchasing Health from Sly’s Shop in Dirtmouth
The most straightforward way to begin strengthening the shell is by visiting Sly. After rescuing him from the bottom of the Forgotten Crossroads, he opens a shop in Dirtmouth. Sly eventually stocks four different Mask Shards, though they are not all available at once.
- The First Shard (150 Geo): Available as soon as Sly opens his shop. This is usually the first upgrade most players acquire.
- The Second Shard (500 Geo): Available immediately alongside the first, provided the player has the currency.
- The Third Shard (800 Geo): This requires the Shopkeeper’s Key, which is found in the Crystal Peak. Once the key is returned to Sly, his inventory expands.
- The Fourth Shard (1500 Geo): Also requires the Shopkeeper’s Key. This is the most expensive shard in the game but remains a priority for long-term survival.
Shards Earned Through NPC Requests and Tasks
Several characters in Hallownest reward the Knight with shards for completing specific objectives or reaching collection milestones. These often require significant backtracking but are essential for a full set.
The Generosity of the Grubfather
As players explore, they will find Grubs trapped in glass jars. Rescuing these creatures and returning to the Grubhome in the northwest of the Forgotten Crossroads triggers various rewards. Upon rescuing 5 Grubs, the Grubfather will toss down a Mask Shard as a token of gratitude. This is one of the earliest shards obtainable through exploration.
The Seer’s Dream Essence Goal
After acquiring the Dream Nail in the Resting Grounds, the player must collect Essence by defeating Dream Warriors and Dream Bosses or by harvesting Whispering Roots. Once the Knight accumulates 1500 Essence, returning to the Seer will grant a Mask Shard. Reaching this total usually involves defeating several late-game dream variants of earlier bosses.
The Grey Mourner’s Delicate Flower Quest
Located in a hidden sub-area of the Resting Grounds, the Grey Mourner tasks the Knight with delivering a Delicate Flower to a grave in the Queen’s Gardens. The catch is that the flower will break if the Knight takes damage or uses the Stagways to fast-travel. Successfully placing the flower at the Traitor’s Child’s grave and returning to the Grey Mourner yields a Mask Shard. It is often helpful to clear the intended path of enemies beforehand without resting at a bench, as many small enemies will not respawn until a rest occurs.
Combat Rewards and Mini-Boss Encounters
Some shards are guarded by formidable foes, requiring mastery of the nail and spells to claim.
The Brooding Mawlek
In the western part of the Forgotten Crossroads, behind a wall that can be bypassed with a well-timed dash or wall-jump, lies the arena of the Brooding Mawlek. This creature spits globs of infection and has a sweeping claw attack. Defeating it reveals a Mask Shard. While accessible early, the fight is significantly easier with the Mothwing Cloak or Mantis Claw.
The Enraged Guardian
In the Crystal Peak, players initially encounter the Crystal Guardian sitting on a bench. After defeating its first form, the Guardian retreats upward to a room directly above the bench. This second encounter features the Enraged Guardian, who is faster and deals double damage. Defeating this version of the boss clears the way to a Mask Shard located at the back of the room.
Mask Shards Hidden in the Environment
The remaining shards are tucked away in secret alcoves or protected by environmental hazards throughout the various biomes of Hallownest.
Forgotten Crossroads: The Goam Tunnel
In the southern part of the Forgotten Crossroads, there is a vertical shaft filled with Goams—invulnerable, worm-like creatures that burst from the walls. Navigating these patterns requires patience. A Mask Shard sits at the very bottom of this tunnel. While it can be reached with precise timing early on, having the Mantis Claw makes the return trip much safer.
Fungal Wastes: Queen’s Station
To the right of the Queen's Station stag bench, there is a small platforming section filled with thorns. The Mantis Claw is strictly required here to wall-jump through the narrow gaps. The shard is located at the end of this short but treacherous corridor.
Dirtmouth: Bretta’s House
Before this shard can be claimed, the Knight must rescue Bretta from the Fungal Wastes. She is found in a hidden area near the Dashmaster statue, appearing confused and overcome by the fungal spores. Once rescued, she returns to her house in Dirtmouth. The house becomes unlocked, and the shard can be picked up from the floor inside.
Greenpath: The Stone Sanctuary
Deep within Greenpath lies the Stone Sanctuary, a dark sub-area that is difficult to navigate without the Lumafly Lantern. The sanctuary is also the home of the No Eyes dream warrior. A Mask Shard is located in the final chamber of the sanctuary, tucked away in the upper-right corner of the room.
Royal Waterways: The Hidden Alcove
After dropping into the Royal Waterways from the City of Tears (using a Simple Key), players should head left and swim through the water. There is a hidden breakable ceiling or high alcove in the pipe-filled area near the entrance to the Fungal Wastes. Finding this requires a bit of upward exploration while swimming west under the main path.
Deepnest: The Fungal Core Path
This is one of the more out-of-the-way shards. It is located in the northeast of Deepnest, but the most direct path is actually through the Fungal Core (below the Mantis Village). Accessing this area requires the Monarch Wings to clear large gaps and the Mantis Claw to navigate the vertical transitions. The shard is found on the left side of the room after descending into the Deepnest border.
The Hive: The Hive Guardian Secret
The Hive is an optional area located behind a breakable wall in the Kingdom’s Edge. Deep within the Hive, there is a large Hive Guardian (the round, bouncing bees). One specific wall in this area looks slightly different. To obtain the shard, the player must bait a Hive Guardian into charging or slamming into that wall, breaking it open to reveal the treasure. If the Guardian is killed before the wall is broken, the player must leave the room and return to respawn it.
Essential Abilities for Full Collection
While some shards can be grabbed within the first hour of play, a full set of 16 requires a nearly complete arsenal of movement abilities. It is generally more efficient to wait until the mid-game to hunt for the more remote shards.
- Mantis Claw (Wall Jump): Essential for the Queen's Station, Stone Sanctuary, and Goam tunnel shards.
- Mothwing Cloak (Dash): Required for almost all combat-related shards and basic platforming.
- Monarch Wings (Double Jump): Required for the Deepnest/Fungal Core shard and highly recommended for the Enraged Guardian arena.
- Lumafly Lantern: While technically optional for the truly brave, it is practically required for the Stone Sanctuary and navigating the darker parts of the Crystal Peak.
- Dream Nail: Essential for the 1500 Essence milestone.
The Impact of Increased Health on Gameplay
Acquiring all 16 shards changes the dynamic of Hallownest exploration. With nine masks, the Knight can survive four hits from bosses that deal double damage (like those in the endgame areas or the Grimm Troupe) without needing to heal. This extra breathing room allows for a more aggressive playstyle, as the player can afford to trade hits to get that final nail strike in.
Furthermore, having a larger health pool makes the use of certain Charms more viable. For instance, Grubsong generates more Soul over the course of a fight if the Knight has more health to lose, and Fury of the Fallen becomes safer to manage when the "one mask left" threshold is easier to define.
For those preparing for the trial of the Godhome, these shards are not just collectibles; they are the foundation of a build that can withstand the most grueling boss rushes ever designed. Every shard found is a step closer to becoming the true vessel Hallownest requires.
