How to Find Every Hollow Knight Mask Shard to Max Your Health
Survival in Hallownest is measured in masks. While the Knight begins the journey with a modest five masks of health, the world’s increasing hostility quickly demands more durability. Increasing your maximum health requires collecting Mask Shards—ancient fragments that, when assembled, bolster your shell against the many dangers of the underground. For every four shards collected, you earn one additional permanent mask, allowing for a total of four extra health points, bringing the maximum permanent HP to nine.
Finding all 16 shards scattered throughout the map is a significant milestone for any player, whether you are preparing for the Trial of the Fool or the grueling encounters within the Pantheon. This guide details every location, the mechanical requirements for each, and strategies to overcome the obstacles guarding them.
The Economy of Health: Sly’s Shop in Dirtmouth
The most straightforward way to begin increasing your health pool is through Geo. Sly, the diminutive merchant in Dirtmouth, stocks four different Mask Shards, but they are not all available at once. You must first rescue Sly from the abandoned house in the bottom-right section of the Forgotten Crossroads after defeating the Gruz Mother.
- Shard 1 (150 Geo): Available as soon as Sly opens his shop in Dirtmouth. It is highly recommended to prioritize this as your very first purchase to get a head start on your first health upgrade.
- Shard 2 (500 Geo): This shard is also available immediately upon Sly's return. The price jump reflects its value, but it is manageable by clearing the surrounding Crossroads of husks.
- Shard 3 (800 Geo): To unlock this, you must find and return the Shopkeeper’s Key to Sly. The key is located in the Crystal Peak, specifically in a room to the left of the area where you first encounter the Crystal Guardian. Once returned, Sly expands his inventory.
- Shard 4 (1,500 Geo): The final shard in Sly’s inventory is the most expensive. It is typically a mid-game purchase when Geo becomes more abundant through the use of the Fragile Greed charm or by exploring the City of Tears.
Combat-Gated Shards: Bosses and Mini-Bosses
Two shards are held as rewards for specific combat encounters. These require a level of nail mastery and pattern recognition.
The Brooding Mawlek (Forgotten Crossroads)
Located in the far western reaches of the Forgotten Crossroads, the Brooding Mawlek is a hidden boss that can be accessed early in the game if you utilize the pogo technique (slashing downward) on the spikes in the entrance corridor.
The Mawlek attacks by spitting globs of orange infection and using its large claws. The safest strategy is to hit once or twice and then move away to dodge its leap or its horizontal spit. Once the Mawlek is defeated, it drops a Mask Shard. This is often the first non-purchasable shard players acquire.
The Enraged Guardian (Crystal Peak)
Located directly above the room where you fight the first Crystal Guardian, this encounter is significantly more intense. You will need the Monarch Wings (double jump) to reach the upper platform leading to the Enraged Guardian’s arena.
The Enraged Guardian deals two masks of damage per hit, making this a high-stakes fight. Its patterns are identical to the first version but much faster. Utilizing charms like Quick Focus to heal during the brief intervals when the Guardian screams, or Shaman Stone to blast it with spells, will make this encounter manageable. Victory yields a shard that appears right in the arena.
Environmental Exploration and Secret Rooms
Seven shards are hidden within the intricate layers of the map, often requiring specific movement abilities like the Mantis Claw, Monarch Wings, or Isma’s Tear.
1. The Goam Room (Forgotten Crossroads)
Deep in the Forgotten Crossroads, near the entrance to the Fungal Wastes, there is a vertical shaft filled with Goams—massive, invulnerable worms that burst from the walls. You must navigate this room with precise timing. At the very top-right of this gauntlet, tucked away in a small alcove, lies a shard. While it can be reached with just the Mantis Claw, it is much safer once you have the Mothwing Cloak to dash through the gaps.
2. The Stone Sanctuary (Greenpath)
In the dark, overgrown Stone Sanctuary, you will find the optional boss No Eyes. However, the shard is located in a room beyond the boss arena. To navigate this area effectively, the Lumafly Lantern is practically mandatory, as the darkness conceals the platforms and thorns. After dealing with or bypassing No Eyes, head to the top-right exit to find the shard sitting on a stone pedestal.
3. Queen’s Station (Fungal Wastes)
This shard is relatively easy to overlook but simple to acquire. From the Queen’s Station stag station, head to the far right until you find a room filled with thorns and small platforms. You will need the Mantis Claw to climb the narrow shafts. By following the path upward and to the right, you will eventually drop down into a small pocket containing the shard.
4. Bretta’s House (Dirtmouth)
Before you can claim this shard, you must rescue Bretta. She is located in the lower-right section of the Fungal Wastes, near the entrance to the Mantis Village. You must navigate a path through the Fungal Core that requires the Mantis Claw. Once she is spoken to, she returns to Dirtmouth. Visit her house (the one that was previously locked) to find a shard as a token of her gratitude.
5. Royal Waterways (Hidden Alcove)
In the northwest section of the Royal Waterways, near where the map-maker Cornifer is found, there is a large pool of water. To the left of this area, hidden behind a breakable wall or simply by swimming under the main walkway, is a secret alcove. You will need to swim through a submerged tunnel to reach the shard on the other side. Note that while Isma’s Tear makes the waterways easier, it is not strictly required for this specific shard as the water here is not acidic.
6. Deepnest (Fungal Core Entrance)
This shard is located in the transition zone between the Fungal Wastes and Deepnest. To reach it, you must enter Deepnest through the Fungal Core (a route that usually requires the Monarch Wings). As you drop down into the Deepnest side of the transition, the shard is visible on a ledge on the left. If you miss it on the initial drop, you can climb back up using the Mantis Claw.
7. The Hive Puzzle
The Hive is a hidden sub-area within Kingdom's Edge. To find this shard, you must locate a breakable wall in the middle section of the Hive. This wall cannot be broken by the Knight’s nail. Instead, you must bait a large Hive Guardian (the massive, club-wielding bee) into charging at you. Position yourself in front of the suspicious-looking wall and dash out of the way at the last second. The Guardian’s impact will shatter the wall, revealing the shard hidden within a small chamber.
NPCs, Quests, and Collections
The final three shards are tied to your progress in major side activities: rescuing grubs, collecting essence, and the infamous Delicate Flower quest.
1. The Grubfather’s Reward
As you rescue the 46 Grubs scattered across Hallownest, the Grubfather in the Forgotten Crossroads will offer various rewards. You do not need to find all of them to get the Mask Shard; it is granted relatively early, once you have rescued 5 Grubs. This is usually one of the first shards players receive alongside Sly's inventory.
2. The Seer’s Essence Milestone
The Seer, located in the Resting Grounds, monitors your progress with the Dream Nail. As you collect Essence from Whispering Roots and Dream Warriors, return to her for rewards. At 1,500 Essence, she will gift you a Mask Shard. This is a late-game acquisition, requiring you to defeat several Dream Bosses (such as Lost Kin or Failed Champion) to reach the essence threshold quickly.
3. The Delicate Flower Quest (The Grey Mourner)
This is widely considered one of the most difficult challenges in the game. The Grey Mourner, located in a hidden house in the eastern Resting Grounds (behind a breakable floor), asks you to deliver a Delicate Flower to the Traitor’s Child’s grave in the Queen’s Gardens.
The catch is that the flower will break if you take any damage or if you use the Stagways or Dreamgate. To succeed, it is recommended to clear the path of enemies first without resting at a bench, as most enemies do not respawn until you rest.
Recommended Route:
- Start from the Grey Mourner’s house.
- Travel through the Resting Grounds into the Blue Lake area.
- Enter the City of Tears through the elevator.
- Head through the Fungal Wastes, bypassing the Mantis Village.
- Enter Fog Canyon and move toward the Queen’s Gardens entrance.
- Carefully navigate the thorns in the Queen's Gardens to reach the grave.
Once the flower is placed on the grave, return to the Grey Mourner to receive your final Mask Shard.
Optimizing Your Health Progression
While you can collect these shards in almost any order, a strategic approach can make the game significantly smoother.
Early Game Priority: Focus on Sly’s first two shards and the Grubfather’s reward. Combined with the Brooding Mawlek shard, this allows you to reach 6 masks before even entering the City of Tears. Having that extra hit point is invaluable when facing the Soul Master or the Mantis Lords.
Mid Game Priorities: Once you have the Mantis Claw, grab the shards in Queen’s Station and Bretta’s house. After acquiring the Lumafly Lantern, the Stone Sanctuary shard becomes a quick pickup. This should comfortably bring you to 7 masks.
Late Game Cleanup: The shards held by the Seer and the Enraged Guardian, as well as the reward for the Delicate Flower quest, are best left until you have upgraded your nail and acquired all movement abilities. The Hive shard is also typically a late-game item due to the difficulty of kingdom's Edge.
Why Maxing Masks Matters
Having 9 masks does more than just allow you to take more hits. It increases the value of every "heal" action. Since each focus takes the same amount of time regardless of your total HP, having a larger buffer means you can stay in a fight longer before needing to retreat and heal. Additionally, many of the game’s harder challenges, such as the white Palace or the final boss encounters, feature hazards that deal double damage. In those scenarios, having an odd number of masks like 9 is superior to 8, as it provides that final "one-hit" insurance policy.
By following this checklist and understanding the requirements for each region, you can methodically build the Knight into a resilient warrior capable of surviving the deepest, darkest corners of Hallownest. Whether it is through the accumulation of Geo, the mastery of combat, or the patience required for the Delicate Flower, each shard is a testament to your progress through this ancient, ruined kingdom.
