Finding Every Altus Plateau Map Fragment in Elden Ring
The transition from the humid marshlands of Liurnia to the sun-drenched, golden heights of the Altus Plateau is one of the most significant moments in Elden Ring. However, that sense of awe often quickly turns into a sense of being lost as you realize the entire region is shrouded in the gray fog of an undiscovered map. To truly navigate the seat of the Erdtree and the surrounding volcanic reaches, obtaining the Altus Plateau map fragments is a non-negotiable priority.
The Altus Plateau is not a single simple plane; it is a complex intersection of the royal capital to the east and the jagged, treacherous Mount Gelmir to the west. This area represents the mid-game peak where difficulty spikes and exploration rewards become monumental. Uncovering the map reveals the intricate road networks that lead to some of the most critical legacy dungeons in the Lands Between.
Reaching the golden heights
Before you can physically touch the monument containing the Altus Plateau map, you have to actually get up there. There are three primary methods to ascend the cliffs, each offering a different level of challenge and narrative flavor.
The Grand Lift of Dectus
The most straightforward, albeit multi-step, method involves the Grand Lift of Dectus. This massive elevator requires the two halves of the Dectus Medallion. The Left Half is found in Fort Haight in the Mistwood (Limgrave), guarded by a knight commander. The Right Half is located in Fort Faroth in the Dragonbarrow (Caelid), a much more dangerous area filled with giant bats and harpies. Once you have both halves, standing before the statues at the lift and "Hoisting the Medallion" will take you directly to the southern entrance of the plateau.
The Ruin-Strewn Precipice
For those who prefer a more traditional dungeon crawl or haven't braved the terrors of Caelid yet, the Ruin-Strewn Precipice is the alternative. Located at the northern tip of the Liurnia ravine, this path involves a series of elevators, ladders, and narrow wooden walkways. It culminates in a boss fight against Magma Wyrm Makar. Defeating him grants access to a lift that brings you out near the Abandoned Coffin site of grace in the Altus Plateau. This path is often preferred by players who want more runes and upgrade materials along the way.
The Abductor Virgin Shortcut
There is a third, more obscure "trap" route. If you allow yourself to be killed by the Abductor Virgin located at the bottom of the water wheel in Raya Lucaria Academy (specifically by its grab attack), you will be transported to the subterranean levels of Volcano Manor. While this technically puts you in the Altus region, you are trapped until you defeat two Abductor Virgins or find a way out to the Seaward-facing cliffs, which eventually leads toward the main plateau.
The Altus Plateau Map Fragment (Main)
Once you have arrived on the plateau via the Grand Lift of Dectus, the first map fragment is remarkably easy to find if you follow the main road. From the lift's exit, head northeast along the wide, paved path. You will soon come to a fork in the road known as the Altus Highway Junction.
Continue heading north. The terrain here is relatively open, but stay alert for patrolling Leyndell soldiers. A short distance from the junction, you will see the familiar stone obelisk (or guide stele) on the left side of the road. This is the location of the Altus Plateau map fragment. Picking this up immediately clarifies the central region, revealing the Woodfolk Ruins to the north and the path leading toward the outer walls of the capital.
It is worth noting that if you came via the Ruin-Strewn Precipice, you would be coming from the west. You would need to head east past the Lux Ruins and the Erdtree-Gazing Hill to reach this same highway junction. The map fragment is positioned strategically to be the first one most players find, acting as a gateway to the rest of the highlands.
Unveiling the Capital: Leyndell, Royal Capital Map Fragment
The second piece of the puzzle is the Leyndell, Royal Capital map fragment. Even after uncovering the main plateau, the eastern section where the Erdtree sits remains obscured. To find this, you must proceed toward the massive double gates guarding the capital's outskirts.
From the Altus Highway Junction, follow the road that leads east. You will encounter a set of grand stairs guarded by two Tree Sentinels. While you can fight them, it is also possible to gallop past them on Torrent. Once through the gates, you will reach the Outer Wall Phantom Tree site of grace.
Directly next to this site of grace is a small golden sapling (which provides two Golden Seeds) and the stone monument holding the Leyndell map fragment. Unlocking this piece is a game-changer. It reveals the sprawling layout of the capital's exterior, the locations of the minor Erdtrees in the vicinity, and the massive staircase leading up to the city's inner sanctum. It also shows the path to the Auriza Hero's Grave and the bridge leading toward the Forbidden Lands.
The Treacherous Path to the Mt. Gelmir Map Fragment
The third and final fragment for this broader region is the Mt. Gelmir map. This is widely considered one of the most confusing fragments to locate because of the verticality and the winding nature of the volcanic terrain.
To reach it, you generally need to start from the north of the Altus Plateau. Head toward the Shaded Castle (the green, poison-filled valley in the north) but instead of entering, look for the paths that lead west into the mountains. You will pass through the Bridge of Iniquity. From here, the path involves climbing a series of long ladders up the rock faces.
Watch for the Grafted Scion that drops down near the first set of ladders. You will eventually reach the Ninth Mt. Gelmir Campsite. From this site of grace, use the Spiritspring jump or the ladder to reach the peak where a Fallingstar Beast boss resides. You don't have to fight it; you can ride past it to the western edge and jump down to the lower path leading toward Volcano Manor.
As you descend toward the manor, look for a road that leads through a ravine filled with hanging corpses and minor Abductor Virgins. The map fragment is located on a monument at a fork in the road, just before you reach the Road of Iniquity site of grace. With this fragment, the jagged geography of the volcano, the location of the Seethewater River, and the various forts surrounding the manor become visible.
What the Altus Plateau Map Reveals
Once all three fragments are collected, the Altus Plateau ceases to be a confusing golden maze. The revealed map highlights several locations that are vital for character progression:
- Minor Erdtrees: There are two in this region. One in the central plateau (guarded by Wormface) and one on the outskirts of the capital. These provide Tears for your Flask of Wondrous Physick that are essential for late-game builds.
- Sacred Tears: Several ruined churches, such as the Second Church of Marika and the Stormcaller Church, are now easy to spot. These churches hold Sacred Tears to increase the potency of your healing.
- Golden Seeds: Beyond the ones found at the Phantom Tree, the map helps you spot the golden saplings scattered along the roads and near the capital walls.
- Dungeon Entrances: The Altus Tunnel and Old Altus Tunnel are visible as small black holes on the map, indicating mines where you can find high-level Smithing Stones (5 and 6).
- Windmill Village (Dominula): To the north, you can now see the cluster of buildings representing the Windmill Village. This is a key location for both loot and a specific questline involving a Godskin Apostle.
Navigational Tips for 2026 Players
As we look at the game state in 2026, the Altus Plateau remains the central hub connecting the early game to the endgame. For those who have the DLC installed, remember that the geography of the Altus Plateau often mirrors or connects thematically to the Scadu Altus region in the Land of Shadow. While the maps are separate, the "vertical storytelling" remains consistent.
When exploring after revealing the map, it is suggested to prioritize the "Sainted Hero's Grave" located in the center of the plateau. It's easily spotted on the map once the fog is gone and provides one of the best Spirit Ashes in the game. Also, use the map to locate the "Shaded Castle" in the northern valley. It's a distinct green patch on the map and is home to Elemer of the Briar and the legendary Marais Executioner's Sword.
Another tip for efficient exploration is to pay attention to the "Mirage Rise" in the central-western part of the plateau. The map won't show the tower itself until you solve a small puzzle involving phantom crests, but the location becomes much easier to pinpoint once the surrounding terrain is mapped out.
Summary of Map Fragment Locations
