Finding Every Map Fragment and Hidden Region in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree
The Realm of Shadow in the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree expansion presents a landscape that is far more complex and vertically layered than anything found in the base game. While the total landmass is roughly the size of Limgrave and Caelid combined, its density is unprecedented. To navigate this sprawling world, players must locate five primary Map Fragments scattered across disparate biomes. Unlike the Lands Between, where most map steles are located along main roads, several fragments in the Realm of Shadow are hidden behind intricate dungeon paths and obscured valley descents.
Accessing the Realm of Shadow Map
Before beginning the search for map locations, specific milestones in the base game must be achieved. Entry into the DLC is only possible after defeating Starscourge Radahn in Caelid and Mohg, Lord of Blood, in Mohgwyn Palace. Once these bosses are neutralized, interacting with the withered arm protruding from the cocoon in Mohg’s throne room transports the Tarnished to the Gravesite Plain, the starting point of the Shadow Realm.
Upon arrival, the map remains shrouded in a "fog of war." Even without the fragments, small stone pillar icons (steles) are visible on the grayed-out map interface, indicating where the fragments reside. However, reaching these icons often requires navigating through legacy dungeons or finding hidden "Spiritsprings" that defy the 2D logic of a standard map.
Where to Find the Five Essential Map Fragments
Each region in the expansion requires a specific fragment to reveal its topography, enemy camps, and minor dungeons. The following are the precise steps to secure all five.
Gravesite Plain Map Fragment Location
This is the first fragment most players will encounter and is the easiest to acquire. From the initial Site of Grace (Gravesite Plain), head northeast across the fields. You will see a large stone archway and the Scorched Ruins in the distance. The map stele is located directly on the main path leading toward the center of the plain, just before reaching the Three-Path Cross where NPCs like Hornsent and Freyja are stationed.
In our testing, this area serves as a low-intensity introduction to the DLC's mechanics, but be wary of the Furnace Golem patrolling nearby. If you attempt to grab the fragment while the Golem is active, its long-range fire rain can easily knock you off Torrent.
Scadu Altus Map Fragment Location
Scadu Altus is the central plateau of the Realm of Shadow, housing the massive Shadow Keep. There are two primary ways to reach this region. The standard route involves completing the Castle Ensis legacy dungeon and defeating Rellana, Twin Moon Knight. Alternatively, a hidden path through the Fort of Reprimand allows players to bypass the boss and emerge on the plateau.
Once you arrive at the Highroad Cross Site of Grace, follow the main road leading north toward the Shadow Keep. The map stele stands prominently on the side of the road, just past an encampment of Messmer’s soldiers. This fragment is vital as it reveals the complex intersections leading to the Rauh Ruins, the Hinterlands, and the Abyssal Woods.
Southern Shore and Cerulean Coast Map Fragment Location
The Southern Shore fragment reveals the Cerulean Coast and the Stone Coffin Fissure. Reaching this area is non-intuitive because it requires a significant descent into the southern canyons.
Start at the Castle Front Site of Grace outside Castle Ensis. Instead of entering the castle, head southeast along a path that leads down into a shallow ravine filled with giant crabs and Miranda sprouts. Follow the river downstream to the Ellac River Cave. After exiting the cave, use the stone pillars in the river to platform downward until you reach the coast. The map stele is located on a cliffside overlooking the blue flower fields, guarded by a Ghostflame Dragon. During our playthrough, we found it best to hug the right-side cliffs to avoid the dragon's frost breath while approaching the stele.
Rauh Ruins Map Fragment Location
The Ancient Ruins of Rauh are divided into an upper plateau and a lower base. The map fragment is located at the Rauh Base, which is reached through a cave system in Scadu Altus.
From the Moorth Ruins in Scadu Altus, look for a small cave entrance to the north, near a shallow pond. This cave leads through a tunnel filled with perfumers and emerges into a misty, forested valley at the base of the ruins. Follow the path westward, past several Two-Headed Turtles and Golem archers. The map stele is located near the Temple Town Ruins. Finding this fragment is essential because the upper Rauh ruins are a labyrinth of elevators and bridges that are nearly impossible to navigate without a visual reference.
Abyssal Woods Map Fragment Location
The Abyssal Woods is the most well-hidden region in the DLC and is effectively a "stealth" zone where Torrent cannot be summoned. Accessing it requires finding a secret path within the Shadow Keep.
In the Shadow Keep's Main Gate plaza (where the Golden Hippopotamus is fought), head toward the ramparts. Look for a ladder hidden behind a row of burning boats. Go down the ladder, follow a path behind a waterfall, and find a hidden room with a painting. Hit the illusory wall in this room to reveal a path to a stone coffin. Ride the coffin to the Castle Watering Hole. From there, navigate south through the Recluses' River until you reach the Darklight Catacombs. You must complete this dungeon and defeat its boss (Jori, Elder Inquisitor) to exit into the Abyssal Woods. The map fragment is found at the Church of Abandonment in the far south of the woods.
Navigating the Vertical Layers of the Shadow Realm
The map fragments provide a 2D overview, but the Realm of Shadow is built on a 3D axis. Many players find themselves standing on a map icon but seeing only a solid cliff face. Understanding the layers is key to full exploration.
The Mystery of the Cerulean Coast and Jagged Peak
To the southeast of the Gravesite Plain lies the Jagged Peak, a towering mountain inhabited by Bayle the Dread. While it looks adjacent to the starting area, you cannot climb it directly. Access is granted through the Dragon’s Pit dungeon. After defeating the Ancient Dragon-Man boss, a door opens at the back of the arena leading to the foot of the mountain and the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion.
The Hidden Path to the Hinterlands
The northeastern portion of the map, known as the Hinterlands or Scaduview, is inaccessible by traditional means. It requires a specific gesture: "O Mother," found at the northern edge of the Bonny Village. Players must take this gesture to the Shadow Keep, Back Gate Site of Grace, and perform it in front of the headless statue in the side room. This opens a secret door to a golden-hued field that contains some of the game's most poignant lore and the Finger Ruins of Dheo.
Accessing Charo’s Hidden Grave
Visible from the Gravesite Plain as a red-tinted plateau, Charo’s Hidden Grave is reached by climbing the Jagged Peak partially and then dropping down onto the plateau from the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion. This area is essential for players seeking the Gravebird armor sets and specialized death-sorcery items.
Key Dungeons and Legacy Strongholds
A map is only as useful as the destinations it reveals. Shadow of the Erdtree features three major legacy dungeons and numerous smaller "Gaols" and "Forges."
Belurat, Tower Settlement
Located in the northwest of Gravesite Plain, this is the first major dungeon. It is a dense urban environment filled with Shadow People and Spider-Scorpions. Exploring every rooftop here is necessary to find the "Storehouse Key," which unlocks further shortcuts. The boss here, the Divine Beast Dancing Lion, is a high-mobility encounter that requires a Scadutree Blessing level of at least 3 or 4 for a comfortable fight.
Ensis Castle
This fortress guards the passage to Scadu Altus. It is a linear dungeon but features a high-difficulty boss, Rellana. If you find Rellana too difficult, we recommend exploring the southern Ellac River first to find more Scadutree Fragments to boost your attack and defense.
Shadow Keep
The central hub of the entire DLC. It is a massive structure with multiple entrances. The "Main Gate" leads to the Specimen Storehouse, while the "Church District" (accessed from the east in Scadu Altus) allows you to drain the water and explore the sunken ruins. The Keep connects to nearly every other sub-region, including Rauh Ruins and the Hinterlands.
Strategies for Successful Exploration in the DLC
Navigating these locations isn't just about following a path; it's about preparation. The Realm of Shadow scales differently than the base game.
- Prioritize Scadutree Fragments: Your character level (e.g., Level 150 or 200) matters less than your Scadutree Blessing level. Almost every Map Fragment location mentioned above is near a Miquella’s Cross, which usually holds a Scadutree Fragment. If you are struggling with enemies in a new map area, stop progressing and look for these gold-glowing items.
- The Use of Map Markers: Because of the verticality, we recommend using different map markers to denote "Upper Level" vs. "Lower Level." For example, use a sword icon for a dungeon on your current level and a diamond icon for something you can see below you but haven't reached.
- Spiritspring Locking: Many Spiritsprings (the air currents Torrent uses to jump) are "locked" in the DLC. You will see a small stone cairn nearby. You must find the corresponding cairn (usually on a nearby ledge) and hit it to unlock the spring. This is the only way to reach certain high-altitude map locations in Scadu Altus and Rauh.
- Lighting and Visibility: In areas like the Abyssal Woods or the Darklight Catacombs, visibility is a major hazard. Equipping the Lantern is a basic requirement, but using the "Starlight" sorcery or carrying a torch provides a wider radius of light, which is crucial for spotting the "Untouchable" enemies in the woods.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Realm of Shadow Map
Can I complete the DLC without finding all map fragments?
Yes, you can physically travel to most locations without the fragments, but the map screen will remain gray. This makes it extremely difficult to track your progress or find specific NPCs. Considering how hidden the Abyssal Woods and Rauh Base are, finding the fragments is highly recommended for any player intending to see the "true" ending or complete NPC questlines.
Why can't I summon Torrent in the Abyssal Woods?
The Abyssal Woods is a lore-specific zone designed around the "Frenzied Flame." The game disables Torrent because the "Untouchable" enemies are meant to be dealt with via stealth. If Torrent were available, the stealth mechanics would be trivialized. The map fragment in this area is specifically placed at the end of a long, dangerous trek to reward players who successfully navigate the madness.
How do I get to the map area in the very top-right (northeast)?
This is the Hinterlands. As mentioned, it is a secret area. You must obtain the "O Mother" gesture from a headless statue north of Bonny Village and perform it at the "Shadow Keep, Back Gate" Site of Grace near the statue of Marika. This reveals a path to the Finger Ruins of Dheo and the Shaman Village.
What is the most difficult map fragment to find?
Most players agree that the Abyssal Woods fragment is the hardest due to the prerequisite of finding the illusory wall in Shadow Keep, riding the coffin, navigating the river, and completing the Darklight Catacombs. It is a multi-step process that can take hours if you don't know the starting point in the Keep.
Is the Realm of Shadow larger than the Lands Between?
In terms of pure square footage on a 2D plane, no. However, in terms of "playable space" and density, it is comparable to a large portion of the base game. The vertical layers mean that one "square inch" of the map might contain three different levels of exploration: a cavern, a surface field, and an elevated bridge.
Navigating the Elden Ring DLC map locations requires patience and a keen eye for environmental clues. By securing the five map fragments and understanding the hidden connections between the Shadow Keep and the outlying regions, players can fully uncover the secrets of Miquella’s journey and the tragic history of the Realm of Shadow.
